Even though New England is still the favorite to win the Super Bowl, we think this Philadelphia team is the best we've seen in the NFL this season.
The way that Carson Wentz has stepped up his game in his sophomore season has been ridiculous, and the additions of Alshon Jeffrey and Torrey Smith seem to have rounded out the offense nicely. Though the Eagles are merely No. 14 in the NFL in passing offense, Wentz is a consensus MVP candidate just beyond the midway point of the season. He has 23 touchdowns against just five interceptions, and he really hasn't had a bad game yet this year.
But the real heroes of this team are on the defensive side of the ball. Fletcher Cox, Timmy Jernigan and Brandon Graham are combining to form a treacherous defensive line, and Nigel Bradham might be the best outside linebacker in football this year. There's a reason why this unit ranks No. 1 in the NFL against the run at 66.4 yards per game allowed.
The mismatch Dallas is going to have here between its offensive line and the Philadelphia defensive line is sickening. The Cowboys were ripped for eight sacks by the Falcons last week with left tackle Tyron Smith out, and with Ezekiel Elliott guaranteed to be suspended for the second game of his six-game suspension, there isn't an elite running back coming through those doors to help out.
Instead, the Cowboys are going to have to count on Dak Prescott making things happen with his arm and his legs. He ran for his life time and time again versus Atlanta last week, and he did account for the only touchdown of the game on the ground. But if he's under this same type of pressure this week that he was when Adrian Clayborn single-handedly wrecked the game, Dallas is in a lot of trouble.
Betting Trends of Note
The Eagles have been favored in Dallas 10 times since 1986. The team is 9-1 SU in those games.
But maybe more important than the history of this rivalry is the fact that Philadelphia flat out can't stop covering games. No matter how hard all of the top NFL sportsbooks are trying, there isn't a way to line this team appropriately right now. The Eagles have covered six straight games, including winning two of those games SU as underdogs on the road.
Dallas only has one cover since Week 1 of the season at home, that coming against Kansas City last week. Then again, it's worth remembering that the Cowboys have had to face the Giants, Rams, Packers and Chiefs already at home this season, and this game against the Eagles isn't going to be any easier than those tough ones.
Eagles vs. Cowboys Free Picks
The fact that Elliott is going to be missing from this game is a huge loss for the Cowboys. Dez Bryant looks like he has lost a step this season and isn't getting the time to break free from coverage that he's used to getting. Without Bryant being totally effective and with Zeke sidelined, this offense goes from dynamic to mortal.
Now toss in the fact that one of the best left tackles in the NFL isn't on the field, and the makings are there for a complete disaster.
We know the temptation is going to be strong to take the points with Dallas in what is seemingly a must-win Sunday nighter at home, but Philadelphia is definitively the better team and should walk away with this victory.
