Eagles vs. Chiefs ATS Picks

NFL Betting Odds

A huge litmus test awaits NFL fans in Week 2 when the Philadelphia Eagles, fresh off a huge road win over the Washington Redskins, invades Arrowhead Stadium to battle a Kansas City Chiefs squad that shocked the NFL world by going into Foxboro and handing the reigning Super Bowl champion Patriots a decisive defeat. While neither of these teams are as good as they looked last week, all eyes will be on Kansas City to see which side remains undefeated.

The Eagles came up with a huge win for the franchise last week in handling Washington 30-17 as short road chalk to snap the teams five game losing streak in the rivalry. It was also the team’s first win in D.C. since 2013. Second year gunslinger Carson Wentz stepped up big and showed why the franchise took a stab with him early on in last year’s NFL Draft. He got the party started early hooking up with wide receiver Nelson Agholor for a 58 yard touchdown for the game’s first points. Philadelphia got out to a 13-0 lead, but saw itself trailing by a point with a minute left in the second quarter.

That’s when Wentz showed just how much he’s grown from last season by getting the team into field goal position to reclaim the lead at the break. The Eagles led the rest of the way ultimately taking the game by 13 points to snag their first dub of the season. The defense played a huge role by shutting Washington’s ground game down, and putting a relentless amount of pressure on Kirk Cousins who committed three of the Redskins four total turnovers. The only negative was Philly’s inability to get their ground game going, and that will once again be a tough chore this week against KC who held New England running backs to just 83 yards on 25 carries.

Early on, it looked like the Chiefs were going to just roll over and take their beating from the defending champs. Down 17-7 in the second quarter with the Patriots driving for more, Kansas City came up with a crucial turnover that changed the game’s momentum entirely. Alex Smith was able to hook up with rookie running back Kareem Hunt for a three yard touchdown pass to pull within three right before the break. From there, it was all Kansas City!

Smith found a wide open Tyreke Hill down the sideline due to a blown assignment, and the rest was history. The speedster raced into the end zone to silence the 66,000-plus in attendance at Gillette Stadium. New England would then go on to score the game’s next 10 points, but it would be the last time the defending champs dented the scoreboard. Hunt’s big night continued soon after when he took a pass from Smith 78 yards to the house, and then followed it up with another four yard touchdown run to build the Chiefs’ lead to eight. KC’s defense kept New England off the scoreboard the rest of the way to preserve the impressive 42-27 outright win and cover as eight point underdogs.

One of the main reasons why the Patriots had such a hard time moving the pigskin on the Chiefs defense last week was because of the lock down coverage Eric Berry put forth on Rob Gronkowski. With Julian Edelman out of the fold and Danny Amendola succumbing to injury early on, Gronk was Tom Brady’s most available lethal weapon. Berry had none of that however limiting the stud tight end to just two catches for a measly 33 yards. Unfortunately, the injury bug came and ended Berry’s season prematurely when it took a bite out of his Achilles tendon putting him on IR the remainder of the season. His absence will give Zach Ertz more room to roam, and likely give him a great shot of improving upon the eight catches he turned into 93 yards last week.

Eagles vs. Chiefs Picks

I still can’t believe what I saw last Thursday night, but if Alex Smith continues to seek out speedsters Hill and Hunt in the passing game with reckless abandon, the Chiefs might have an offense that can actually contribute. The betting public looks to be all in on Kansas City at the top-rated sportsbooks with nearly 62 percent of the betting handle riding the home team. The line certainly looks to be headed upwards, and if that turns out to be the case, I’ll gladly take the points with an Eagles squad I have pegged as making some noise in the NFC. As much as Smith impressed last week, I’m more a believer in the younger Wentz who also put forth one of the better QB stat lines of Week 1. Look for both defenses to ugly this game up a bit more than over bettors would like, and for the game to be undecided late in the fourth quarter. It wouldn’t be a shock if my final score prediction was reversed. I’m bullish on Philly this season!
