Well at least the Fins put forth an effort they could better stomach last week, right? Anything would’ve been better than the garbage put forth in a 40-0 blanking at the hands of what was a struggling Baltimore Ravens squad to kick off Week 8. Jay Cutler surpassed the 300-yard passing threshold for the first time as a Dolphin, but the defense simply couldn’t find a way to stop tight end Jared Cook or keep Marshawn Lynch out of the end zone.
Because of it, Miami was saddled with a second straight defeat and now finds itself a .500 team entering the tenth week of the season. They’re in jeopardy of dropping a third straight versus Carolina on the road where the team has split its first four games tallying wins and covers at the Chargers and Falcons, while logging defeats at the Jets and Ravens.
You have to hand it to Ron Rivera and his staff. They did a fabulous job putting out some fires after dropping back-to-back ugly affairs to the Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears by bouncing back with a pair of hard fought victories within the division. After taking Tampa Bay down 17-3 as short 1.5-point underdogs, they returned home and handed the defending NFC champion Atlanta Falcons a 20-17 defeat as 3-point pups.
The win moved Cam Newton and company to 2-2 straight up and 1-3 against the spread as a host. The team’s turnaround has had everything to do with a defense that’s allowed no more than 17 points in its last three games. Fourteen of the Bears 17 total points were scored defensively. With that, the Panthers march the league’s No. 1 ranked total and No. 4 ranked scoring defense to the gridiron for this MNF tilt against the Dolphins.
-8 – The Panthers offense leaves much to be desired. That’s been the case ever since they represented the NFC in the Super Bowl a few years back. It’s ranked No. 21 in total offense, No. 24 in passing offense and No. 24 in scoring offense. The only thing it’s league average in is running the pigskin ( No. 15 ). With that, the offense has done itself absolutely zero favors by giving the ball away 16 overall times. Eleven via the interception and five by coughing up the pigskin. On the flipside, Miami has only turned it over 11 times and enters this tilt with a -3 turnover margin compared to Carolina’s -8. Should Carolina continue to feel charitable, it’s going to be awfully tough to put enough distance between them and the Dolphins to cover a number like this.
Dolphins vs. Panthers Picks
The Panthers are my kryptonite this season. It doesn’t matter if I bet for them, against them, over or under – I’m not cashing the ticket. With that the case, take what I have to say here with a grain of salt. Carolina has been nothing but a money burner in the home favored role since rattling off five straight wins through mid-September of last season. Since then, they’ve gone 4-5 straight up and a bankroll bursting 2-6-2 at the top 5 online sportsbooks the last nine times they went off the board favored in front of the hometown faithful. Making this game all the more ugly is the fact that Miami has failed to cover in each of their last seven Monday night appearances. Instead of going back and forth in a game I have absolutely zero interest in, I’ll just throw a dart. Look at that, I just nailed Flipper right between the eyes!
