Detroit Lions vs. Indianapolis Colts
Date and Time: Sunday, August 13, 2017, 1:30 p.m. ET
Location: Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis, IN
Week 1 Preseason Opening NFL Odds: Pick, O/U 37.5
Lions vs. Colts TV Coverage: NFL Network
The Lions have Matthew Stafford at quarterback but he is not expected to play long and Detroit is in worse shape in terms of a backup quarterback than almost any team in the league. The Lions didn’t bring back Dan Orlovsky so they have to hope that Jake Rudock and Brad Kaaya are up to the job.
The Colts have a solid backup to Luck in Tolzien but in the first preseason game it seems unlikely that Tolzien will play long. That means a lot of Stephen Morris and Phillip Walker.
The Colts have had an intense training camp under Chuck Pagano who is definitely coaching for his job this season. New general manager Chris Ballard has said the Colts need to be tougher and Pagano has gotten the message. Pagano said that the defense is a bit ahead of the offense right now. "You know, I think this is pretty much standard. I think the defense is probably a little bit ahead than the offense right now," Pagano said to UPI. "That's not to say we're not doing some good things. We started to run the football a little better. But I like the way our defense is coming together.”
Lions vs. Colts Free Picks
The Lions and Colts have been practicing together this week and usually when that happens before a preseason game there are very few secrets. Both teams have questionable backup quarterbacks and it is hard to see how either offense does much. I am a bit surprised the total on this game is so high at 37.5. I think with the quarterback situations for both teams that the total should be one of the lowest on the board for the first week of the preseason at top NFL sportsbooks. I will go under the total with the Lions and Colts on Sunday.
