Denver Broncos vs. Chicago Bears NFL Picks on Thursday

2016 NFL Odds

The Chicago Bears are slight favorites on Thursday night as they host the Denver Broncos in NFL preseason action. The Broncos begin the season as the defending Super Bowl champions but they are without both of their starting quarterbacks from last season so the preseason will be all about finding a starter between Mark Sanchez, Trevor Siemian and rookie Paxton Lynch. On the other side, the Bears are set at quarterback with starter Jay Cutler and backup Brian Hoyer.

Let’s look at Thursday’s game and NFL picks.

Chicago Bears -1.5, total 35

Broncos Quarterback Battle

The focus with the Denver Broncos in the preseason is on the quarterback position with Mark Sanchez, Trevor Siemian and rookie Paxton Lynch battling for the starting job. It looks as if it will probably come down to Sanchez or Siemian as the starter but neither one has been impressive so head coach Gary Kubiak is not ready to name a starter. The first game against Chicago will be a big one for all three players. “I want to get them out there, I’m going to put a number of throws on each one of them,’’ Kubiak said. “And that’s going to have a lot to do with decision-making time to be honest with you.’’ Sanchez has more experience but Siemian is the better passer and Lynch is the future starter once he gains experience.

“Guys have good days and rough days,” Kubiak said. “I think what’s going on is they’re all doing good stuff. And then there’s struggles at times and those type of things. But it’s very, very competitive.’’

Bears Comfortable with Cutler and Hoyer

The Bears have a very stable quarterback situation with Jay Cutler as the starter and Brian Hoyer as the new backup. "I think he's done a great job," Cutler said about Hoyer. "It's hard, coming off being a starter for a couple years and then coming into a situation where they're asking you to do a different role, there's a transition period for that. But since we've gotten into camp, he's really taken to it and done a really good job of helping me, looking at coverage, talking to guys and sometimes being the bad guy. He's really done a good job with that."

Game Notes

The Bears also have David Fales and Connor Shaw as backup quarterbacks and both could see playing time on Thursday night. The Broncos went 3-1 in the preseason a year ago under Kubiak and Kubiak’s teams have been good in the preseason going 21-14. The Bears also went 3-1 in the preseason a year ago under John Fox and his teams throughout the years have been solid in the preseason going 31-25.
