Cowboys vs. Packers ATS Picks

NFL Week 6 Lines

The Green Bay Packers have enjoyed enormous success against the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC rival’s recent history having won each of the last five overall meetings and covering the closing pointspread in four of those games. There is however some renewed optimism in Big D with a couple rookies catapulting the Boys to the top of the NFC East standings. The Packers have yet to find their groove and could be on upset alert in Week 6.

Through five weeks’ worth of games, it’s safe to say the Cowboys are a much different team with new blood leading the charge than the one you just knew was going to find a way to lose a game with a crucial turnover or blown coverage. Rookie Dak Prescott is yet to turn the ball over as the QB1 of the offense, and rookie Ezekiel Elliott has made the most of running behind one of the best offensive lines in the league with three straight 100-plus yard rushing performances.

Along with the offense finding its groove, the defense has also taken steps in the right direction limiting its first five opponents to an average of just 18.2 points per game and ranking No. 11 versus the run. On top of that, it owns the No. 7 ranked defensive yard per point average, and while Green Bay ranks No. 11 in that category on the offensive side of the ball, the Packers could be a bit more one dimensional with Eddie Lacy possibly out or nursing an injured ankle.

It looked like the Packers were going to have their way with the Giants after the opening drive of last Sunday Night’s tilt on the “Frozen Tundra.” Aaron Rodgers led a 16 play drive that took nearly nine minutes off the game clock and ended with a touchdown strike to Jordy Nelson. To the dismay of over bettors, there would be only one more touchdown drive after that with Rodgers routinely missing his receivers down field.

When it was said and done, Green Bay had only amassed a grand total of 406 yards but only put 23 points on the scoreboard. That equated to a 17.6 offensive yard per point average which was better than 4.5 yards worse than its seasonal average. Hardly the type of offensive output Mike McCarthy wanted to see coming off a bye after managing just three points against the Lions in the second half of a game it was forced to withstand a furious comeback in.

Player to Watch

It’s been nearly impossible to run on the Packers this season. Clay Matthews and company have conceded an average of just 42.8 yards per game (No. 1) at 2.0 yards per carry (No. 1), and even though it’s accrued those stats against some of the worst rushing offenses the league has to offer, it’s dominated in that category.

Needless to point out, but Zeke is not going to go off in this one. That means all eyes will be on Dak Prescott to see if he can take advantage of a pass defense that’s given up an average of 274.5 yards per game (No. 24) and could still be without its top cover man in Sam Shields.

Green Bay could be without the services of Lacy which means the much lesser James Starks will be asked to tote the mail. On top of that, Rodgers could be without Davante Adams as well who was forced to leave last week’s game against the Giants with an undisclosed injury. When you take the injuries into account with the offense’s poor execution its last six quarters of play, I can’t help but think Green Bay is going to once again struggle to put points on the board against the confident Cowboys.

Even with the Packers running up against a less than impressive cast of rushing offenses, I still believe it will live up to its high billing and extremely limit Elliott’s output. Still, every one of Green Bay’s games played to date has been uncomfortably competitive and I don’t foresee that trend changing this afternoon with both defenses leading the charge. Look for a low scorer to play out on the odds at
