Kansas City dropped a 17-10 decision to Houston in Week 1 which saw the underdog and under cash. Patrick Mahomes saw limited action in his debut as the Chiefs QB1 and completed 5 of 7 passes for 33 yards. The trio of quarterbacks that followed weren’t much better with Chad Henne, Chase Litton and Matt McGloin combining for 193 yards and a 1:1 TD/INT ratio.
Pump the brakes if you’re concerned about the offense’s output in Week 1. The game plan was extremely vanilla. One bothersome note however was the defense’s inability to put any type of pressure on the Texans quarterbacks against Houston retooled offensive line. They failed to register a single sack. It will be most concerning if that outputs repeated against an Atlanta O-Line that allowed three QB sacks last week.
We faded the Falcons last week with the belief that Dan Quinn would continue to take a very basic approach towards the preseason. His team failed to log a win or cover in any of its four played games last year, and that trend once again held true in the team’s listless effort in a 17-0 defeat at the hands of the rebuilding New York Jets.
Matt Ryan saw one series and completed his lone pass for -2 yards. One of the main reasons we faded Atlanta last week was because of its poor quarterback rotation. Those names haven’t changed this week, but you have to imagine Kurt Benkert, Matt Schaub and Garrett Grayson will find a way to be more productive in their second go round.
Player to Watch
Demarcus Robinson – He was our player to watch last week against the Houston Texans, and we’re going to have our microscopes magnified upon him once again this week against the Falcons. Robinson has shined all throughout camp, and his excellent production continued in the Chiefs first live game action of the season after he snagged three of four targets and turned them into 48 yards and a touchdown.
With stud pass catching options like Travis Kelce and Tyreke Hill already locked into their positions, Robinson has just about solidified his spot as the No. 2 wide receiver. If he ultimately sees it all the way through, Kansas City without a doubt is going to have one of the most potent passing attacks in the league this season. Hopefully he continues to be utilized with the guys ahead of him likely to see more reps this week. Fantasy footballers will be taking a huge interest into how the targets shake out. I know I will!
Chiefs vs. Falcons Free Picks
I played a game of Russian roulette with Andy Reid last week and lost. I knew all along how disinterested he is about the preseason, yet I snagged some Chiefs shares against the Texans. I paid for it dearly. In falling 17-10, Reid fell to 35-42 SU and 34-42-1 ATS lifetime in the exhibition season. We’ve already mentioned the Falcons recent no care stance about the preseason, so this is a tough call to make.
The second and third string defense was the main reason for KC’s loss after allowing Brandon Weeden to light it up for 97 yards and a couple scores. I’m expecting a better overall effort this week and will roll the dice on Reid once again with the hope that the first string offense gives the backup defense enough of a cushion to win the game outright.
