Week 5 NFL Odds at BookMaker.eu: Raiders -4, 50
Chargers vs. Raiders TV Coverage: CBS
The Chargers suffered one of the worst defeats in franchise history back in Week 1 when it allowed the Kansas City Chiefs to storm back from a 27-10 deficit in the fourth quarter to push the game into overtime where they eventually lost 33-27. While they covered the closing number, it was still a sickening way to kick off the season.
It was déjà vu all over again last week, but this time at home where they held a 34-21 lead with eight-plus minutes remaining. The offense went scoreless the rest of the way while the defense conceded the game winning 14 points to Brees and company to fall by a gut-wrenching 35-34 final count. Mike McCoy is now the odds on favorite in the first coach to be fired prop at +260.
While the Raiders have only scored two more points than they’ve given up this season (108-106), Jack Del Rio’s troops check in 3-1 SU and ATS with two of those wins coming by way of one point. The first occurred back in Week 1 in New Orleans where Del Rio elected to go for a two-point conversion at the tail end of the fourth quarter to avoid overtime with his defense unable to slow the Saints defense all game long. The bold move paid off.
The second occurred last week in a game against the Baltimore Ravens that likely should have never gotten to that point. The Raiders dominated the entire game up until the fourth quarter when a 21-12 lead turned into a 27-21 deficit eight minutes later. Derek Carr and company would not be silenced however after the third year gunslinger marched the offense right back down the field and hit Michael Crabtree for a third touchdown reception in the game to snatch the victory back from the jaws of defeat.
Player to Watch
Paging Khalil Mack. Paging Khalil Mack. Where are you sack master Mack? Mack notched an impressive 15 sacks a short season ago, but only just registered his first last week against the Baltimore Ravens. Oakland’s defense is giving up an absurd 460 yards per game (No. 32), and much of that is due to a lack of pass rush with the defense averaging just 1.2 sacks per game.
San Diego owns a below average front wall that’s allowed Philip Rivers to get thrown to the turf an average of 2.2 times per game. The Raiders only got to Rivers twice in last year’s pair of brawls, and he averaged 300 passing yards because of it. If Mack isn’t able to set the tone here today, they’ll be in jeopardy of falling to 0-2 at home.

Oakland swept the season rivalry last season in notching the high scoring 37-29 outright win and cover as 3.5 point underdogs at Qualcomm and then took a 23-20 decision in overtime back at home but failed to cover the closing odds at BookMaker.eu. The total split and has done so each of the last two seasons.
Better than 64 and 70 percent of the action is backing the Chargers and the over for this one, but I tend to disagree. Oakland’s much-maligned defense might have just had its moment last week that gets the unit back on track after preventing Baltimore to get into range for Justin Tucker to kick the game winning field goal – which he likely would have made. Three of the last four meetings at the Coliseum between these rivals have combined for low scorers, and this is the highest point total this matchup has seen in Oakland since 2012.
