Opening NFL Odds: Broncos -1.5, O/U 41.5
Broncos vs. Colts TV Coverage: NBC
The Broncos' 23-0 win over the Jets last week had to be maddening for their fans. It was proof that this team has always been capable of something special in a 4-9 campaign.
Then again, it's also worth remembering that they were the Jets on the other side of the field. They're one of the worst teams in the NFL in spite of the fact that they were always on the fringes of the AFC playoff picture until last week.
Trevor Siemian and several others are probably playing for their jobs right now. Few believe that Siemian has a job as a starting quarterback in the NFL after this year, but at least if he proves to be the best of the three quarterbacks on the roster, he might be able to hold onto a job as a backup somewhere else next season.
Siemian remains Denver's top passer this year, but a 59.1 percent completion percentage and a 12/13 TD/INT ratio isn't doing much to inspire.
The Colts have totally fallen apart. It's a wonder if Luck is ever going to be himself again after missing the whole season due to injury, and the only win this team has since October 8 came against Houston. The three wins Indy has accounted for this year have come against teams that have combined for just seven victories, and it's not like the Colts had to face either the 49ers with Jimmy Garoppolo or the Texans with Deshaun Watson.
Indianapolis is playing with another lame duck quarterback and for a lame duck coach. Jacoby Brissett knows that it's back to the bench next season after getting a chance to start this year, and Chuck Pagano knows that he's destined to be a defensive coordinator at best next season somewhere aside from Indy.
The two have the exact same problem. This offense has been pathetic this whole season. The Colts rank No. 30 in the league in total offense and in scoring, and they only have one game all season long – against Cleveland, no less – in which they have scored more than 23 points in regulation.
Betting Trends of Note
The Broncos are about as bad as it gets in the NFL, and they've only been favored in two games this entire year. Denver was a chalk on the road against Buffalo and at Miami in September and December respectively, and both games were lost.
The Colts were only favored in one game this season, that coming against the 49ers at home. Heck, this team wasn't even a favorite at home against Cleveland back in Week 3!
Of course, kudos to Indianapolis for winning both the game against the Browns and the one against the 49ers, though this is clearly a tougher challenge than either of those affairs.
Broncos vs. Colts Free Picks
The Colts stuck around with the Bills last week because of Mother Nature providing a de facto snow globe to play in at Buffalo. To us, it just feels like the season is long over, and there isn't a game left on the schedule save for perhaps a Week 17 duel at home against Houston that can be won.
The Broncos are awful as well, but at least their defense is showing up every week. It's a little-known fact that this club, in spite of its 4-9 record, ranks first in the league in total defense. Don't let that No. 24 ranking in scoring defense fool you; this team is still as good as it gets defensively. We'll lay the point and a half at our favorite football sportsbook.
