Through the first four weeks of the regular season, the Broncos offense flourished and was helped out even more by the defense routinely setting it up with short fields or leads to protect after scoring themselves. None of that occurred this past weekend at Sports Authority Field where Gary Kubiak’s troops were handed a 23-16 defeat at the hands of the red hot Atlanta Falcons.
Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman gouged the Broncos linebacking corps for huge gainers out of the backfield, and because of it, all the talking heads on most sports networks believe this to be the way to solve the riddle that’s been one of the best defenses in the league for a couple years now. The Chargers likely won’t be able to mimic that plan of attack with Danny Whitehead gone for the season and Melvin Gordon reeling in a total of just 14 receptions out of the backfield through five games.
The chargers “MO” for the season thus far has been to hold a lead in the second half only to piss it away and fall in defeat. That occurred right out of the gates after Mike McCoy’s squad saw a 27-10 fourth quarter lead evaporate into thin air and ultimately turn into a 33-27 overtime defeat. After destroying Jacksonville the following week, the chargers were back at it again letting the Colts pull out a 26-22 home win and cover on a 63 yard scoring strike with just over a minute remaining in the game.
If those two defeats weren’t painful enough, San Diego added to its fans’ collective misery over the next two weeks as well. The Saints rattled off the last two touchdowns of the game to turn a 34-21 deficit into a sickening 35-34 triumph, and then the Raiders scored 15 straight points down five points in the third quarter to pull out the 34-31 win after the Chargers failed to get the game tying field goal off with just over two minutes remaining. If even two of those games ended differently, this would be a much bigger game for both sides.
As stated earlier, the Broncos have had their way with the Chargers of late in winning five straight and covering the closing number in three of those games.
Surprisingly, the battle in San Diego was far more one-sided than the one at Mile High. Denver’s defense held Philip Rivers without a touchdown pass and allowed just 202 yards passing in the 17-3 road win and cover as 6 point chalk. Rivers was better in the second go round throwing for 207 yards and a pair of touchdowns which was good enough to grant Chargers’ backers the pointspread win in a 27-20 defeat as 10 point dogs.
Broncos vs. Chargers Free Picks
When you take into account the way in which the Chargers have lost so many games with the fact that their injury report is a mile long, it’s actually pretty impressive that they’ve been able to compete in every one of their games. Sunday’s nauseating defeat marked the tenth straight loss San Diego incurred against a divisional opponent. The early money for this one expects that run to continue with the visiting Broncos receiving better than 76 percent of the action on the current odds at BookMaker.eu.
I’ll however be betting against the norm in this one. Denver looked out of sorts offensively with Paxton Lynch under center in allowing him to get sacked six times. I believe throwing Siemian back into the mix this quickly could end up being catastrophic. Not having Gary Kubiak on the sideline could also play a role. Look for the Chargers to snap both streaks tonight and finally give their suffering fan base a huge win to throw their collective hats on.
