In one of the more surprising end results of the Week 3 slate, the Bears pulled out a 23-17 overtime win to log the first triumph of the campaign. After Mike Glennon was picked off twice last week in Tampa Bay, offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains made kept the pressure off his QB1 by making a conscious effort to look to his ground game. Some might say he ran it into the ground after he called Jordan Howard and Tarik Cohen’s number a combined 35 times.
The duo converted those carries into a whopping 216 yards with the former rushing for a season-high 138 yards and two touchdowns. The final one coming in the extra session when he carried a couple Pittsburgh defenders with him into the end zone. With the passing game nonexistent through three games, Chicago invades their neighbors to the north house owners of the No. 9 rankled rushing offense ( 121.7 YPG ).
Sunday’s tilt with Cincinnati got off to a decent start with both clubs exchanging first quarter touchdowns, but all hell broke loose when the Bengals took 14-7 lead minutes into the second quarter. A couple minutes later, Aaron Rodgers was pick-sixed in a big way when William Jackson III took one the other way 75 yards to get the visitors out to a commanding 21-7 lead that would hold into the third quarter.
It was all Green Bay from there however. The Packers defense buckled down holding the Bengals to just three points the rest of the way with the field goal coming with just under four minutes remaining in the game. Aaron Rodgers then calmly led the offense down the field for the game tying score, and then won the game in the extra session on a Mason Crosby 27-yarder after the defense came up with yet another stop.
Each team will attempt to utilize their offensive strength with both stop units deficient in stopping those strengths. Chicago will utilize its 1-2 punch in the backfield to look to take advantage of a porous Green Bay defense that’s conceded 115.5 rushing yards per game ( No. 21 ) at a hefty 5.1 yards per carry ( No. 28 ). On the flipside, Rodgers will look to continue terrorizing a Bears defense he’s torched through the air ever since taking over the QB reigns from Brett Favre. The Bears rank No. 20 at defending the pass, and allow 8.2 yards per pass attempt ( No. 27 ). Whichever side is best able to take advantage will likely end up winning this game.
Bears vs. Packers Picks
The Bears were flat out embarrassed in their first road trip to Tampa Bay where they simply killed themselves with four turnovers. I expect a much better semblance of themselves put forth in this matchup against a division rival. Save for one blowout in the last five seasons, Chicago hasn’t embarrassed itself on the “Frozen Tundra.” In the other four matchups, the Packers were held to an average of 20.5 points per game. Look for Chicago to once again pound the ground a ton in this matchup so as to limit Rodgers exposure to the playing field. These rivals played to low scorers at the top five online sportsbooks four of the last five times they went at it in Green Bay. With each coming off exhilarating overtime victories, I expect there to be a bit of a letdown that hinders the game’s overall pace and play.
