The 49ers came back to beat Dallas in Week 1 after outscoring the Cowboys 14-0 in the fourth quarter to pull out the 24-21 triumph. Unfortunately, the three point margin of victory came a hook short of covering making those that laid the 3.5 point extremely unhappy. Hopefully they live bet the Niners on the live betting pointspread and moneyline when they trailed 14-0 to make up for it.
Either way, rust was apparent with the Niners as Jimmy G and the offense failed to do much of anything in their limited action. C.J. Beathard went on to pass for 181 yards, but only completed half of his 20 passes. Nick Mullins stole the show late completing 11 of 13 passes for 141 yards and the game winning touchdown with only 18 seconds remaining. Whomever shows best in Week 2 would get the leg up in acquiring the backup role.
Running the football was a big problem for the Texans last season. That was an issue Bill O’Brien and his staff looked to rectify last week when just as many rushing plays were called as passing plays. A 50/50 split like that in the regular season would likely do the team some real good with the defense expected to be one of the best in the league with a healthy J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus returning.
Lamar Miller was efficient with his four totes racking up 29 yards and a 7.3 yard per carry average, while three other backs combined for 44 yards on 16 carries; not so good. What put the Texans over the 100 yard mark was quarterback Joe Webb’s 42 yards on four QB scrambles. As you can see, the ground attack is still a work in progress, but it looks to be on the up and up.
San Francisco – Jimmy G saw one series last week. He looked a bit rusty in completing half of his six passes for 34 yards, but he did get back to hooking up with Marquise Goodwin which was nice to see. He’ll likely receive a full quarter of three series in this one. Then the battle of the backup job will be on between Beathard and the rookie form Southern Miss. It’s possible and likely Jack Heneghan gets some mop up duty as well.
Houston – Though Brandon Weeden stole the show last week leading the Texans to the win over the Chiefs, you have to think O’Brien loosens the leash on Watson with this being the team’s first home game. He only got one series last week and completed his lone pass, but you have to think he’ll get at least a quarter’s worth of burn in Week 2 preseason betting. He’ll be followed by Webb, Weeden and possibly Stephen Morris.
49ers vs. Texans Free Picks
As we alluded to earlier, both teams are going to have a pretty good idea of what their opponent will look to do in this one after cracking skulls with them in practice leading up to kickoff. With that, I don’t foresee either offense doing much in the way of scoring in this one. I didn’t like what I saw from San Francisco’s starting defense last week against the Cowboys who ran all over them sans Zeke. That sets up another opportunity for O’Brien to keep giving his running game reps. Houston has the stronger and deeper defense, and in the end, I foresee it allowing them to remain undefeated in the preseason both SU and ATS. Don’t expect many points to hit the board in this one either.
