While Kyle Shanahan’s debut wasn’t as peachy as Sean McVay’s with the Rams, there were still some nice things to take away from the team’s 23-3 defeat. For starters, the defense wasn’t embarrassing. It only allowed a grand total of 287 yards, and if not for a couple bad turnovers by the offense, it might have held the Panthers to less than 20 points. The unit only allowed 3.6 yards per carry and didn’t concede a rushing touchdown.
Pierre Garcon stepped into the Niners offense with ease. While that was expected due to him already being fully immersed in Shanahan’s schemes while with Washington, he still reeled in a game-high six receptions on 10 targets and turned them into 81 yards with a long of 22. He was the offensive star with veteran Brian Hoyer right behind him. While the QB1 completed 24 of 35 passes, the offense is going to need more than 193 yards for it to compete with the defenses it’s set to run up against within the division.
Seattle’s Nazair Jones was the one who ended Rodgers streak on Green Bay’s opening possession. While it seemed like the pick-six would give the team all the momentum it needed to get out to a great start on the “Frozen Tundra,” it was unfortunately called back due to penalties. From there, the Seahawks failed to put points on the board and had their starting cornerback, Jeremy Lane, ejected due to getting into a scuffle with Davante Adams.
That play took all the steam out of Seattle’s collective balloon. Even though it took a 3-0 lead into the break, the squad didn’t look good on either side of the ball. Russell Wilson struggled mightily only completing 14 of 27 passes for a measly 158 yards. This against a Green Bay defense that was routinely torched through the air all of last season. The ground game also failed to get on track with Wilson’s 40 yards on two carries leading the way. The hogs up front also conceded three quarterback sacks. The same things that bogged this offense down last season remained in the team’s season opener.
Matchup to Watch
How the ground game goes will go a long way in determining whether the Seahawks come anywhere close to covering this lofty impost. Carolina averaged less than 4.0 yards per carry with guys like Jonathan Stewart and Christian McCaffrey toting the rock. Each is better than anything Seattle will trot onto the field this Sunday. Chris Carson looks to be the best of the unit right now. Eddie Lacy just needs to go away, and Thomas Rawls is hurt. The Panthers were able to salt last week’s game away by moving the chains to hold a near 10 minute advantage in time of possession. If Seattle is able to mimic that effort, its passing game will be able to excel and get it comfortably ahead of this number. If not, Seattle backers will be sweating until the bitter end.
49ers vs. Seahawks Picks
Thankfully the best NFL sportsbooks have four other games going in the afternoon slate, so maybe the betting public will turn their attention to them and not get in on what’s already been determined to be a blood bath. Sportsbooks will be hard-pressed to get much San Francisco action, and for good reason. The Seahawks have won six straight and covered each of the last nine times they hosted this NFC West rivalry. Their current win streak saw them come out on top of those games by an average of 17.7 points per game. That right there will no doubt have all the action going one way. But when the betting public zigs, I zag. Gimme the near two touchdowns with a San Fran team that has a capable trio in Hoyer, Garcon and Carlos Hyde along with an improved defense.
