The Rams don't technically have nothing to play for in this one, but there isn't a lot of difference between being the No. 3 seed and the No. 4 seed. In fact, one could argue that the Rams would be in better shape if they indeed finished fourth, knowing that they're likely to draw the Eagles in the divisional round of the playoff instead of the Vikings.
Sean McVay has spent this entire season pulling every trick out of his book that he can. He's run fake punts, fake field goals, flea flickers, double passes, reverses, and everything else that is out of the ordinary you could imagine.
The prudent thing to do would be to punt this game and give both Jared Goff and Todd Gurley the week off.
Gurley, in particular, has been a madman this year. Gurley wasn't even on the map for the MVP award until a couple weeks ago. Since that point, he has scored six touchdowns and racked up over 400 scrimmage yards in massive wins on the road against the Seahawks and Titans.
All told, Gurley has touched the ball 343 times this year and has accounted for 2,093 yards and 18 total touchdowns.
The 49ers just keep getting better and better as this year winds down, and they have Jimmy Garoppolo to thank for it.
In his four starts, Jimmy G has thrown for 1,268 yards and five touchdowns, posting a quarterback rating of 98.9. He's got confident beaming through this entire franchise at the moment, but this game is a big one for him. Another big game, and it's going to be really hard for the Niners to ultimately not give him a huge contract extension in the offseason.
6 – The number of wins Garoppolo has won in a row to start his career, more than anyone else since Ben Roethlisberger in 2004.
Garoppolo has been amazing, and what has really separated him from the rest of the quarterbacks in San Fran this year is his ability to stretch the field out. Garoppolo has nailed Marquise Goodwin on gobs of these deep middle throws over the course of the last four games, and he's incorporating Trent Taylor and George Kittle more and more, too.
These aren't class names that are being thrown to at this point. It's a wonder what Garoppolo can do with a really good team around him; we might find out in the time to come, especially with what projects to be a great draft class coming this year thanks to all of the extra ammo that was picked up in the Mitchell Trubisky deal during last year's NFL Draft.
49ers vs. Rams Free Picks
There's no reason to do anything but take the points in this game. The Rams don't have any good reason to play out the string in this one, and though we have a hunch they will, they still aren't necessarily even the better team at the moment.
That Jacksonville defense that Garoppolo just shredded is one of the best in the NFL. Nobody has scored 30-anything against the Jags since Week 2, let alone 44.
The six points that we're getting in this game from all of the top internet sportsbooks? Consider them a late Christmas present.
