The story of this West Virginia team probably won't be told for a little while yet. The Mountaineers have played against one of the easiest schedules in America in the last three weeks, beating East Carolina, Delaware State and Kansas up pretty good. Will Grier and the offense have managed to put up at least 56 points in each of those three games, yet it's worth remembering that these three teams are all amongst the dregs of college football at the moment.
Even that 31-24 loss to Virginia Tech to kick off the season might not have told us much, knowing that the Hokies are good, but perhaps not as great as they were cracked up to be after they were clocked by Clemson last week at home.
That said, at least we know who this West Virginia team is. This is a club that isn't going to take its foot off of the gas pedal and is going to ultimately try to score as many points as possible on a weekly basis. Grier has thrown for 1,374 yards and 13 touchdowns in just four games, while his two top wide receivers, Gary Jennings and David Sills V have combined for 55 receptions, 834 yards and eight trips to the end zone.
It's hard to believe that the No. 5 scoring offense in America resides in Fort Worth. It's easy to say that a lot of TCU's 47.8 points per game is because of its schedule, but dropping 44 in Stillwater while dominating the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball isn't easy. Patterson was quick to point out that his team was good enough to run the table this season and finally get that spot in the CFP that TCU felt it was unfairly cheated out of in the first year of the playoff, and he might be right.
Kenny Hill is playing the best ball of his collegiate career at the moment, and he's getting a slew of help from a ground game averaging 232.2 yards per game.
We briefly touched on that TCU offensive line a second ago, but it's worth mentioning just how good this unit has been. Darius Anderson is averaging 6.2 yards per carry, and every single time he has gotten anywhere near the end zone, he has been successful in plowing in.
The Horned Frogs have four senior starters along their offensive line, but the real hero here has been new line coach Chris Thomsen, who came over from Arizona State and has had an immediate impact.
The Mountaineers are undersized up front on the defensive line, and though they're a speedy bunch, they're liable to get worn down in their first game in a month against another big time Power Five team.
West Virginia vs. TCU Free Picks
Whereas Virginia Tech and Mississippi State couldn't handle the pressure that came with a sudden boost in notoriety, we think this TCU team is going to be much, much different. The Horned Frogs are capable of handling success thanks to the fact that they have 18 returning starters from a year ago and a slew of seniors playing on both sides of the ball.
This moment isn't going to be too much for it with College GameDay coming to town.
West Virginia doesn't know what's about to hit it. We think this is going to turn into a statement of a Saturday for the Horned Frogs as they crush this number posted at all of the top online sportsbooks.
