Perhaps West Virginia's season would have been different if Will Grier didn't break his finger last week in the first quarter against the Longhorns. Grier arguably should have been given more consideration for the Heisman Trophy this year before this injury, and it's clear now that he was the heart and soul of this WVU team.
Chris Chugunov came in to replace Grier against the Longhorns and only put 14 points on the board. Chugunov isn't a total stiff, but he isn't Grier either.
That's going to put a lot of pressure on Justin Crawford and Kennedy McKoy on the ground. These two men have just shy of 1,400 rushing yards this season. They were bottled up last week against UT with 82 yards on 24 carries between them. If that's the case again this week, Oklahoma is going to run the Mountaineers off the field.
Oklahoma's offense continues to be out of this world. Baker Mayfield just keeps dumping huge numbers on every team he runs up against.
Mayfield has basically won the Heisman Trophy at this point with his 3,816 yards and 34 touchdowns. He's been helped dramatically by his skill players, particularly Rodney Anderson. Anderson has 749 rushing yards and 283 receiving yards, totaling 12 touchdowns in 11 games.
7.4 – The number of yards per pass attempt the Mountaineers are allowing this season.
Mayfield is leading the nation this year with 11.60 yards per pass attempt (minimum 14 attempts per team game). The highest since 1956 in college football is the 11.35 yards per pass Michael Vick pulled off in 1999. Mayfield came just short of that last year at 11.08 yards per throw, and he's set to break the all-time record this year.
That said, the Mountaineers aren't quite as bad defensively as you might think. They're holding teams to just 57.4 percent completions and 7.4 yards per pass attempt.
Mayfield's quarterback rating of 201.6 is ridiculous, but the Mountaineers are at 131.4 for the season.
Needless to say, this matchup is going to be the one to watch in this game. If the 'Eers can force the Sooners into some less-than-ideal passing situations, there's a great chance they'll have to stay in this game.
West Virginia vs. Oklahoma Free Picks
The Mountaineers aren't going to be given a lot of respect in this game at any of the best college football sportsbooks due to the fact that Grier is out of the fold, but with a full week of preparation, perhaps Chugunov can give us a game to be proud of. Let's remember that the Dana Holgorsen has been able to put together big offensive performances no matter who his quarterback has been.
Chugunov will, of course, not be anywhere near what Grier would be in a game like this, but there are a lot of points that we're getting from the best internet sportsbooks as a result.
The Sooners just have too many games like this one where they don't seem all that focused. We're talking about a team that is 2-0 ATS since October against spreads of less than a touchdown and just 1-5 ATS with double-digit spreads like this one.
The Mountaineers have been dogs twice this season, once against TCU (a 31-24 loss that easily could have gone either way) and once against Oklahoma State (a 50-39 loss that could have easily been covered).
