Good for the Longhorns for picking up their sixth win of the season last week at West Virginia. They were short underdogs at all of the top NCAA football sportsbooks and were absolutely the better of the two teams on the field in Morgantown.
The best part about getting to a bowl game is the fact that Herman is going to get a few bunch of practices for whatever bowl game Texas ends up in. Even if this game is lost to the Red Raiders, getting those extra practices could be crucial in the future.
Sam Ehlinger wasn't a statistical maven against West Virginia last week, but in actuality, it was one of his best performances of the season. He went 12-for-19 for 136 yards with two touchdowns and an interception and added 68 yards on the ground.
The decision to can Kingsbury could be made before this game ever kicks off for the Red Raiders. Texas Tech's boosters have been increasingly unhappy about the way Texas Tech has performed over the course of the last few seasons, and merely going 6-6 and going to a middling bowl game isn't cutting it any longer. The Big XII has had too many problems across the conference for the Red Raiders to stay uncompetitive for this long, and that's why a change might be precipitated.
Perhaps Kingsbury could fend off the dogs if he can get his team to a bowl game, but we know that a loss in this one is sure to be the end of his tenure at his alma mater.
T-Tech has been on a ridiculous slide at the end of the campaign. The Red Raiders were ranked after starting 3-0, and a 4-1 start with a close loss at Oklahoma State wasn't the end of the world. Since that point though, Kingsbury has led this team to a 1-5 record, and the one win was against a one-win Baylor side.
233 – The number of rushing yards the Longhorns racked up last week against West Virginia, the most it has gained against a serious opponent this season.
Texas did have 406 yards against San Jose State, but the team has been a disaster on the ground otherwise. UT is averaging just 144.2 yards per game on the ground, No. 92 in the nation. Perhaps getting Connor Williams back into the fold from a two-month layoff with a knee injury will help. The whole Texas offensive line looked great against West Virginia, and that's why the Longhorns were able to pound the rock against a defense that is constantly underrated.
Texas Tech vs. Texas Free Picks
Texas Tech's pass defense is woeful, but its rush defense isn't much better. If the Longhorns can get the ball moving on the ground (especially with actually running backs instead of Ehlinger), they're going to be in a great position to win this game and to heap some further woe on the Red Raiders.
Nic Shimonek might have impressive overall stats, but he's certainly no Patrick Mahomes. This team wasn't fantastic when Mahomes was under center, and it's even worse with his backup trying to run the show. The Red Raiders don't deserve to go bowling this year, and their little flaws will add up to a huge problem against Texas to end their season.
