Washington Huskies vs. Ohio State Buckeyes TV Coverage: ESPN
It was a disappointing season for the Washington Huskies. Although they won the PAC 12 title for the second time in three seasons, they will be thinking about what could have been this offseason. Their hopes of winning a national title were put on life support after a loss to Auburn in Atlanta in the season opener, and they were completely snuffed out after an overtime loss to Oregon in mid-October. The Huskies suffered another loss to California a couple weeks later, but they rallied to knock off Stanford and defeated Washington State in the Apple Cup to claim the PAC 12 North title. Washington played one of the ugliest games you’ll ever see to win the conference and earn a trip to the Rose Bowl, beating an injury depleted Utah team 10-3.
Ohio State was rather disappointing for most of the season too. The Buckeyes defense was a sieve, allowing loads of yards and points to mediocre opponents, and they were hammered 49-20 by Purdue in the middle of October to effectively end their hopes of making the College Football Playoff. Ohio State nearly lost to Nebraska, Penn State, and Maryland, but the Buckeyes whooped Michigan in the Big Game to earn a trip to the Big Ten Championship Game. In Indianapolis, they beat an outmatched Northwestern team 45-24 to earn a trip to the Rose Bowl.
The Buckeyes haven’t had Nick Bosa since the third week of the year, as Bosa got injured and decided to prepare for the 2019 NFL Draft instead. Ohio State may also be without WR Cameron Brown, G Demetrius Knox, and K Marcus Hooker too.
Washington took a couple hits at wide receiver when Chico McClatcher and Quinten Pounds were lost for the season due to injuries, and they have been without defenders Amandre Williams, Austin Joyner, and Jared Pulu for quite some time too. They seem to be relatively healthy coming into this game though, and the month off has helped get injured players ready.
Ohio State Buckeyes Player to Watch
A big performance against Washington in the Rose Bowl might force Dwayne Haskins’ hand. Haskins has yet to declare himself eligible for the 2019 NFL Draft, but with Justin Herbert’s announcement to return to Oregon for one more season, he has become the top prospect on most teams’ draft boards. There is no shortage of teams looking for a signal caller, and he could be the No. 1 pick with a great game and a solid performance at the combine. As such, this will be more than just another bowl game for him.
Washington Huskies Player to Watch
On the flip side of the coin is Jake Browning. Browning was seen as an early round pick coming into the season, but he has now regressed for two straight seasons and might not even be drafted at this point. The four-year starter has won a lot of games over the course of his career, yet he only shined as a sophomore. He knows he needs to flash on tape, and I think Chris Petersen will give him plenty of chances to shine against a bad Ohio State defense.
Huskies at Buckeyes Prediction
The over is the best bet in this game. We have seen four straight Rose Bowl games have 60 points or more, and I think both teams will air it out here. I’m not too sure on a side as the number looks spot on given Ohio State’s problems on defense, but the over should hit.
