Oklahoma Sooners vs. Texas Longhorns TV Coverage: ESPN
The Texas Longhorns have renewed hopes with the highly celebrated arrival of new head coach Tom Herman, who immediately proved his head coaching worth down the road at Houston after cutting his teeth as Urban Meyer’s offensive coordinator at Ohio State. Herman inherited a dispirited program that previous head coach Charlie Strong could not quite turn around. Although it may take a little bit longer than Horns fans had hoped the future is considered to be bright by all.
The Longhorns and Sooners have one of the best traditional rivalries going in all of sports and this matchup, like most of the previous ones, will be full of high stakes drama with the Big 12 title being a key factor. It is likely that the Sooners were looking ahead to this one and obviously looking beyond pesky Iowa State. A 17-3 Oklahoma lead probably served to further blind the Sooners to the task at hand and led to the ultimate catastrophe against the Cyclones.
Player to Watch
Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield is likely going to be the difference maker in this one. Mayfield has an eye-popping 75% completion rate with 15 touchdown passes, ZERO interceptions, and 12.2 yards per pass attempt. He also has the brass leadership qualities so important for a quarterback. Mayfield can hardly be blamed for the loss to Iowa State as the Sooner defense allowed 449 total yards and was picked apart for 343 yards passing by the Cyclones.
Oklahoma is 4-1 straight up and 3-2 against the spread after last week’s stunning 38-31 home loss to Iowa State in which the Sooners were 31 point chalks. Oklahoma ranks second nationally for total offense and sixth for scoring offense. As is nearly always the case with Big 12 Conference teams it is defense that is of paramount concern. OU ranks 46th nationally for points allowed.
Texas is 3-2 straight up and 3-1-1 against the spread after a 40-34 home overtime win over Kansas State that was a push on the betting board. The week before that Texas scored a 17-7 win at Iowa State that will have more than a few gamblers comparing notes. Texas ranks 34th in the nation for total offense and 42nd for total defense.
Oklahoma scored a 45-40 win over Texas last year but failed to get the cash as 13 point overlays. The Sooners have won five out of the last seven meetings in this head to head series but the Horns have come away with the money in the last four meetings between these two teams. Oklahoma and Texas have gone over the total in five out of their last seven meetings.

Texas fans are smelling blood in the water and why not, the win over a tough Kansas State team is a sign that Herman has quickly got this team going in the right direction. When they look at Oklahoma’s debacle of last week, Hook ‘em fans are thinking victory is at hand.
Lincoln Riley got a great lesson on how fast a big time college football coach can go from the penthouse to the outhouse. Only a win over Texas can give him the possibility of being forgiven for last week’s debacle. Since the public will be reacting to recent events and betting on Texas I’ll take the beaten favorite Oklahoma Sooners to roar back to life with a payout over Texas.
