Ohio State vs. Nebraska ATS Picks

NCAAF Week 7 Odds

The Nebraska Cornhuskers hung in there for 35 minutes against Wisconsin last week at home before ultimately getting shellacked by three touchdowns. If they have the same sort of problems in the second half against the Ohio State Buckeyes this week, they could be staring an historically bad defeat in the face that sends Mike Riley to the unemployment line.

Speaking of history, the Buckeyes were historically great against Maryland last week. The defense allowed just 66 total yards, the fewest it has conceded in a Big Ten game since 1960. The Terps managed just 16 passing yards, the fewest by any Big Ten team against Ohio State since 1989. Ohio State also reached 50+ points for the third consecutive game, the third time in its history it has pulled off such a feat.

We'd say that Kevin Wilson's new aerial offense is starting to really pay dividends.

J.K. Dobbins is taking a lot of the credit here, but J.T. Barrett is playing himself back into the Heisman Trophy discussion. He has 322 rushing yards and 1,502 as a passer, and he hasn't thrown a pick since the lousy Oklahoma game he had back on September 9. Since that point, he's averaging over 10 yards per pass attempt and has 13 touchdowns without an interception.

Nebraska played like a team that had something to prove last week against Wisconsin for 30 minutes. The Cornhuskers put more yards on the board in that first half against the Badgers than they had allowed in a whole game at any point this season. They were tied midway through the third quarter before things went sideways when they couldn't slow down Jonathan Taylor.

All Riley has to show for a good two quarters of work is a 38-17 loss that pushed him back towards getting fired after two straight wins over Rutgers and Illinois.

If we're being honest about Nebraska, there isn't much to be happy about. This team hasn't had a solid offensive performance all season long, and the fact of the matter is that it hasn't completed a full game in spite of a few good halves of football.

Key Player

We hate to pin all of these Nebraska problems on Tanner Lee, but there has to be a better option for the Children of the Corn at some point. Though the Huskers had a nice first half, the second half drive chart was ugly.

In total, 19 plays, 68 yards, two first downs and a turnover. Yuck.

It's easy to blame the defense for letting the Badgers run roughshod in the second half, but that unit was dead in the water with all of the three-and-outs that were going on. Lee has been a horrible waste in Lincoln, and most probably wish he had just stayed at Tulane.

Ohio State vs. Nebraska Free Picks

Going to Lincoln is never easy. Win or lose, the Cornhuskers faithful always shows up and shows out, and this game is going to be one of the last big showcases of the entire season.

That said, it's hard to intimidate these Buckeyes. They went into the hornet's nest at Indiana to start the season and put together a huge second half to run away and hide in that game, and they've managed to play in some huge venues over the years.

With as well as Barrett is playing, it's hard to see the Buckeyes rolling over and being even remotely challenged. This one screams a squash match to us similar to the 62-3 whooping the Bucks issued to Nebraska last year when the teams met in Lincoln.
