Miami vs. Florida State ATS Picks

Week 3 NCAAF Lines

Hearts are sure to be heavy on the sidelines of both the Florida State Seminoles and the Miami Hurricanes on Saturday night in Tallahassee. Following the devastation of Hurricane Irma all across the state, this game will provide an opportunity to forget a little bit about the troubles that came and the problems that will ensue for weeks in the Sunshine State. Whichever team manages those emotions better on Saturday will likely be the one to pick up a huge victory.

It's really hard to get a good gauge right now on either of these teams. Virtually everyone in America has played at least two games at this point in the season, but both of these clubs only have one offering, both of which came against teams that are nothing like the one they're going to face on Saturday.

Florida State is going to have to take on the Canes after losing 24-7 to Alabama in Atlanta to kick off the campaign. The Seminoles were tremendously outplayed in the second half when the wheels fell off against the No. 1 team in America, but their offense should look a heck of a lot better this time around against Miami's defense than it did versus the Tide.

Miami only has a game against Bethune-Cookman on its resume to date. The 41-13 win was a nice start to the campaign, but again, that test is far from the one that the team will get in Tallahassee.

The Hurricanes at least have to feel like they found a quarterback to replace Brad Kaaya. Malik Rosier went 17-for-28 for 217 yards with three touchdowns against the Wildcats. Sure, the ground game helped him out a ton with Mark Walton and Travis Horner combining to run for 256 yards and a pair of touchdowns. But Rosier was pretty efficient for his first collegiate start, and that's a good sign going forward.

Key Player

All eyes are going to be on true freshman, James Blackman for Florida State. We're not so sure how much this kid can really take, but we're going to find out in a hurry. Blackman was forced into duty when Deondre Francois was knocked out for the season with a torn patellar tendon. However, instead of getting his first shot as a starting quarterback last Saturday against Louisiana-Monroe, that game was cancelled, and he's going to have to deal with the Hurricanes instead.

This, of course, all comes on the heels of the devastation of Hurricane Irma and will also be a short week of practice with Florida State being closed through at least Tuesday.

Let's remember that Blackman was never a top recruit. He was always expected to be Francois' backup and nothing more at FSU, but he's getting his shot at the big time on Saturday night.

If we had to guess, this game isn't ultimately going to be played on Saturday night due to the widespread damage all over the place thanks to Irma. However, if we assume that the show must go on, we have to back the Seminoles, even in a situation with a quarterback effectively taking his first meaningful snaps in college.

Blackman wouldn’t have gotten into such an important spot for FSU if Jimbo Fisher didn't believe in him, and the fact of the matter is that the Seminoles are going to rely on their defense and their power running game with Cam Akers and Jacques Patrick anyway. Parlay all of that with a defense that might be one of the best five in America and a short line presented by all of the top college football sportsbooks, and you've got the makings for an emotional victory in Florida's capitol.
