Memphis has gotten itself into some trouble at times this season, but the team has consistently rallied for victories. This is the team's final road game of the year, and so long as it can hold up its end of the bargain in this one and against both SMU and TCU, it will be on its way to the AAC Championship Game where it will almost certainly play either UCF or South Florida.
The Memphis offense? It's frightening. The team ranks No. 11 in the land at 500.2 yards per game and is averaging 42.5 points per game. Riley Ferguson is leading the nation's tenth-best passing attack at 329.0 yards per game.
The Memphis defense? Equally terrified. The Tigers rank No. 118 in total defense and No. 104 in scoring defense. Clearly, if they're going to ultimately reach the New Year's Six and play with a Power Five team, they're going to have to improve upon their defense greatly.
This Tulsa team is weird. The Golden Hurricane challenged Toledo, Navy and SMU and stunned Houston. Yet it's the same team that was dumped as a 10-point favorite by New Mexico and a four-point favorite by Connecticut. The end result is a 2-7 start the season, one that will be capped off with near-certain losses against Memphis and South Florida before a visit from Temple will end the season.
But it's not like the Golden Hurricane are toothless. They have a fantastic rushing attack led by D'Angelo Brewer and Shamari Brooks. These two have combined for 1,667 yards and 18 touchdowns on the ground this season, and that doesn't even include the eight rushing scores by part-time quarterback Chad President.
The Last Meeting
Last year's Tulsa team was much better than this one, and it still had no answers for the Memphis offense.
Ferguson was picked off twice and only went 19-for-40 passing, but he also threw for 349 yards and hooked up with Anthony Miller 12 times for 250 yards.
Miller leads the team with 61 receptions and 859 yards this season as well, including a 224-yard outburst with four touchdowns against Connecticut.
The Golden Hurricane rank No. 128 in the land in total defense, and if they can't find a way to slow down the Tigers, they could be in line for a long, long day.
Memphis vs. Tulsa Free Picks
The Tigers are just bulls in a china shop right now offensively. Take out a dud game against UCF, and what's left is a team averaging 515 yards and 46.7 points per game. Memphis has posted at least 400 yards and at least 30 points against each of the rest of its foes this year.
We know that we're playing with fire going against a Tulsa team that has shown it can beat one of the best teams in the AAC, but at some point, a team like this just flat out gives up. There's no hope for the Golden Hurricane to go bowling anymore, and they're a tremendously overmatched team, particularly when their defense steps onto the field.
The Tigers could be set to put on a show on Friday night, and we know we want them on our side when we login to our favorite internet sportsbook and bet on this game to start our weekend.
