Location: Ohio Stadium, Columbus, OH
Opening College Football Odds: Ohio State -30
Maryland vs. Ohio State TV Coverage: Big Ten Network
The Buckeyes have had to really get their deep passing game going as they were expected to attempt under new offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson. That said, the Bucks have a dominant, young running back in J.K. Dobbins, a man who has come out of nowhere to completely supplant Mike Weber as the main tailback in Columbus.
Ohio State is 4-0 to show for its work this year, and its 56-0 win over Rutgers was its most impressive display of the young season. The Buckeyes racked up 628 yards of offense, and J.T. Barrett was on point for much of the night to lead to the victory.
There's a big difference between playing against Rutgers and a team like Maryland since we know that the Terps aren't going to take their foot off the gas pedal even if they are being dominated.
Maryland is only averaging 63 offensive snaps per game, but it feels like it has a much more explosive offense than its showcasing. D.J. Moore and Ty Johnson are both tremendous playmakers, and they could both be in prime positions to stand out on Saturday night.
The biggest problem that we see is that this team doesn't have a quarterback. Max Bortenschlager, Kasim Hill and Tyrrell Pigrome have combined to throw just 89 passes this season, and virtually all of those pass attempts have been of the low-risk variety.
54.3 – The number of points per game Ohio State has put up against Maryland since the Terrapins joined the Big Ten three seasons ago.
The Terps have allowed 581, 499 and 533 yards in their three games against Ohio State, and it's hard to see them slowing down the Buckeyes in this game. The question is whether their offense can amass more than the 176 yards they put up last year in a dire 62-3 loss.
Durkin has really improved this team in the offseason, and we have to imagine that we're going to see the Terrapins put up a similar point total to the 28 they scored against Ohio State in their one visit to the Horseshoe in 2015. Ohio State's defense has been prone at times against good competition, though it's still hard to say that Maryland is or is not truly "good competition."
Maryland vs. Ohio State Free Picks
We've been riding against Ohio State for much of this season, and we're going to continue to do so in this game. The Buckeyes aren't in any real threat of being upset, but the Terrapins can play for sure, and they're going to make some things happen. None of the best internet sportsbooks are taking this team anywhere near seriously, but we wonder if that's a mistake.
Maryland has beaten Minnesota and Texas on the road, and its one loss to UCF looks better and better with each passing game the Knights play.
Ohio State's offense wasn't interested in beating the snot out of UNLV or Army, and the only displays that we have seen that suggest this team has one of the more explosive offenses in America came in the second half against Indiana and last week against Rutgers.
If we go under the assumption that Maryland is the second-best team on Ohio State's schedule to date behind Oklahoma, it's easy to see that the Terrapins could ultimately provide a nasty fight for a team that probably won't see said challenge coming.
