Had you told a Texas fan a decade ago that the team would be truly celebrating a 17-7 win on the road against Iowa State in 2017, he would have told you that you were off your rocker. Alas, the win last week in Ames on Thursday Night Football was a good one in spite of the fact that it was about as unspectacular as you can get. The offense was all over the place, and though the defense was good, this game was more about bad offense by ISU than anything else.
Still, wins are wins at this point, and the more of them that Herman can put together in his first season on the job in Austin, the more likely he's going to be able to get this team back to National Championship contending status in the years to come.
At least it's nice to have Shane Buechele back in the lineup after he missed a couple games dinged up. He went just 19-for-26 for 171 yards with a touchdown and a pick against Iowa State, but he has the potential to be a star behind a defense that can make even a few touchdowns turn into victories.
But let's not just discount this Kansas State team either. Bill Snyder is going to go down as one of the more underrated coaches in the history of college football when he finally calls it quits, as he's made this program one of the more consistent in a tough Big XII without having much in the way of a recruiting base.
The results, though, have been consistent. There hasn't been much luck against Texas in the past, but this year's team is 3-1, will be live in this game, will have a shot against both Oklahoma and TCU at home in the next couple weeks and ultimately probably win seven or eight games to play in a respectable bowl game.
We've talked about problems with the Kansas State wide receivers before, and we're going to bring this up again. The drops, the missed routes, the poor blocking assignments on running plays... It's all going to mean a lot more on the road in Austin than at any other point this year.
Isaiah Zuber is evolving into K-State's one legit threat at the wide out spot. Sure, Byron Pringle, Dalton Schoen and Isaiah Harris all have a touchdown catch of at least 55 yards this year, but Zuber has 17 receptions for 208 yards and two scores, making him the only man with double-digits in catches on the season. He'll have to be sturdy in the face of one of the better defenses in the country to win this game.
Kansas State vs. Texas Free Picks
Texas has come a long way from its 51-41 loss to Maryland at the outset of the year, but it feels like we're right at the perfect point for the train to fall off the tracks again.
Jesse Ertz has played well on the road in his career for the Wildcats, and he was much better than his stats will show against Vanderbilt in the team's one loss of the campaign.
All of the best online sportsbooks are giving you a bit of a hint in this game that Kansas State will be live. The insinuation is there that the Wildcats would be favored if this game was played in Manhattan, and we're not all that sure that they aren't pulling off this upset.
