It's hard to really get a decent read on this Fresno State team right now. The club is 2-0 ATS after going to Tuscaloosa and "only" losing 41-10 as a six-touchdown underdog. The Bulldogs do have a big win over Incarnate Word, but that won't tell us much either.
Facing yet another huge spread, the Bulldogs are really up against it in Seattle. Let's not forget that Chason Virgil is only quarterbacking his 12th career game against the Huskies, and his stats as a starter against FBS teams are pathetic. Sure, his 133-yard performance against Nebraska last year was the first game of his young career, but he didn't complete a single pass for more than 12 yards. He did have a 30-yarder against Alabama, but there really is no ability to stretch the field at all.
Washington is a comfy 2-0 after snagging its first cover of the season against Montana last week. The 63-7 victory was incredibly easy, as the Huskies covered the 39-point spread with plenty of room to spare.
It's a little concerning the Myles Gaskin hasn't really gotten going this year, but Jake Browning has done nothing to hurt his fringy Heisman candidacy, throwing for 543 yards and four touchdowns in his first two games of his sophomore season.
Betting Trends of Note
Chris Petersen knows what it's like to be a double-digit favorite at all of the best college football sportsbooks week in and week out from his time at Boise State. The Broncos were always expected to blow teams out, and amazingly, they feel like they did the job virtually every week.
Washington isn't at Boise State's level merely because of the caliber of competition it has to face every week. But in this case, the Huskies are going to be double-digit favorites for the 14th time in the last two seasons this week. The team is just 3-7 ATS in its last 10 games as double-digit favorites, including losing at home SU to USC back in November.
Fresno State is 4-1 ATS in its last five games as a double-digit underdog, though it hasn't won any of these games SU.
Fresno State vs. Washington Free Picks
The Huskies wanted to put on a show in their first game of the season at home against Montana, and they did just that, getting a punt return for a touchdown, an interception that should have been a touchdown and was just short, and throwing a lateral to a left tackle that came up a yard shy of being a touchdown.
This week is more about taking care of business than anything else. We don't suspect we're going to see anything too out there with a rematch of last year's Pac-12 Championship Game against Colorado on deck in Boulder in Week 4. There simply isn't a reason to get anyone in harm's way in this game, one that should be in hand from the get go.
That's why we're going to take the immense amount of points with Fresno State for a second consecutive week. Alabama never had a shot of getting in front of that number, and we have to imagine that the Bulldogs are going to at least put some pressure on the Washington offense to get into the 40s to cover a number like this one.
