College Football Betting Odds
Pittsburgh Panthers: +4
Ole Miss Rebels: -4
The Panthers had themselves quite the interesting 2012 season on the college football betting odds. The team was raked by the Youngstown State Penguins in the opening game of the year, a game in which they never led against the FCS foes, but it turned around two weeks later and smashed the heavily favored Virginia Tech Hokies by three scores. Still, the team was 2-4 through six games and 4-6 through 10 games, but in the end, wins over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights and South Florida Bulls were good enough to get here to a bowl game.
Ole Miss had to scratch and claw as well. Not only did the team have to deal with the SEC West this year, but it had to clash with Vanderbilt and Georgia from the SEC East and Texas out of conference. To the Rebels' credit though, they did stick with 19 in Tuscaloosa, only lost to the Bayou Bengals by six in Baton Rouge, and ultimately won the Egg Bowl to become bowl eligible.
QB Bo Wallace is really improving as the season wears on. Give Head Coach Hugh Freeze credit for sticking with his sophomore to beat the college football wagering odds, as he had three games with at least two picks in the first six weeks of the year. After that though, he settled down and threw 11 TDs against seven picks for the rest of the year, but three of those INTs came against LSU.
Senior QB Tino Sunseri did a nice job of hanging onto the football this year, throwing just two picks, and that's why the Panthers were a solid team to back on the college football wagering odds. However, he had just 19 TDs and 3,103 yards, numbers that don't totally cut it for a team that was projected to contend for the Big East title this year.
Free Pick – This is the third straight year that the Panthers are coming to Birmingham for the BBVA Compass Bowl, and it has to be getting old. Year two of this bowl game was bad enough for U-Pitt, as the team was beaten 28-6 by a middling SMU Mustangs squad. Now, with a significantly better Ole Miss team that is hungry playing in what might feel a little bit like a road game, we just don't see how the Panthers ultimately end up competing.
