2017 League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational

eSports Betting

Coming into the second-biggest League of Legends tournament of the year, SK Telecom T1 and Flash Wolves looked to be the two best teams here in Brazil and many expected these teams to meet in the finals. While SKT held up their end of the bargain, Flash Wolves could not and limped through the group stage in order to get here. However, they have been a perpetual thorn in the side of SKT and stand a much better chance of knocking off the titans than prior results would suggest.

League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational Semifinal 1

SK Telecom T1 -1300

Flash Wolves +750

HOW THEY GOT HERE

SKT got here by virtue of winning another Korean championship and have looked like the most dominant team in the world. They rolled through the first leg of the round-robin before stumbling against two of their Asian rivals, Flash Wolves and Team WE, and those losses show that this team is at least a little vulnerable.

Flash Wolves looked nothing like the dominant force we saw at IEM Katowice or all throughout the Spring Split LMS. They dropped their first two games on Day 1 and were on the back foot following that, needing to win their last game to force a one game playoff against Team SoloMid for the final spot in the semifinals.

PRIOR MEETINGS

Flash Wolves won three of four against SKT last year and managed to get a 1-1 split off of SKT in the Group Stage here at this year’s MSI.

In the first match between these two sides, it was all SKT. Huni dominated his top lane matchup against MMD with a surprise Fiora pick. He ended the match with 88 CS more than his opponent’s Nautilus and kept the popular tank selection in check.

The second match was a complete reversal. Although SKT’s bottom lane duo of Bang and Wolf won a lot of the early skirmishes, the rest of the map fell to shambles for the Koreans. Faker’s pick of Orianna into a Syndra proved that even he can’t play himself out of a mismatch, while MMD and Karsa teamed up on Huni in the top lane. It was the worst performance out of SKT by far this tournament.

PREDICTION

Flash Wolves cannot afford to let Peanut get on Lee Sin. He went undefeated on the champion throughout the entire Korean season, but somehow teams were okay with letting him draft the Blind Monk at the start of the tournament. That changed after he continued to romp over his opponents on the character and it should be a must ban.

The additional must-bans should be LeBlanc and Syndra from SKT and Twitch from Flash Wolves. Maple can challenge Faker on either LeBlanc or Syndra, but isn’t as great on other champions and kkOma knows that. As for the Twitch ban, Bang continues to work the meta and has been absolutely deadly on Twitch, especially when SKT decides to go with a protect the AD Carry composition.

Credit to the Flash Wolves, they have always been an interesting team that thinks outside the box and can best anyone in one game. However, SKT is just a level above everyone else in the world and will adjust quickly to any trick that Flash Wolves try to pull. SKT should win this series 3-1 with Flash Wolves surprising them for one win.
