What is a Knockdown (or Knock Down) ?
Just to be clear, an official knockdown is ruled when a fighter is punched and: #1 a part of his/her body other than the feet touch the canvas (such as his knee or glove). #2 When a fighter is being held up by the ropes. #3 When a fighter is hanging on, through or over the ropes. #4 A fighter cannot protect himself for whatever reason or lodged in a position when he can’t fall.
A slip or fall to the canvas that results in any of the above conditions is NOT a knockdown. The fighter must also be able to get back up and continue fighting. A flash knockdown is one where a fighter hits the canvas but recovers quickly enough that a count is not started.
Inside the Boxing Odds
The two chalk bets are obviously the result of a boxing rookie facing the best fighter of the generation. For historical context, Mayweather has only been knocked down once in his career - all the way back in 2001 against Carlos Hernandez.
Whether it was really a knockdown is debatable: Mayweather wasn’t hit solid, didn’t even drop to a knee and his glove barely scraped the ground. It could have easily been ruled a slip. The ref gave him a standing count anyway and “Money” went on to easily win the fight.
McGregor has never boxed professionally and is expected to be outclassed by Mayweather. So you can see why it’s so expensive to bet that “Money” won’t get knocked down. That’s also why the “Yes” play on McGregor getting knocked down is the chalk as well.
The best values on this prop bet are the “Yes” on McGregor getting knocked down. At -238, it’s not crazy expensive and it seems likely that the Irishman will get caught by the boxing superstar at some point over 12 possible rounds.
For context, Mayweather to win straight up is currently around -650. All of a sudden that -238 doesn’t seem to bad, right?
