Washington Mystics vs. Minnesota Lynx
Date and Time: Friday, June 23, 2017, 8 p.m. ET
Location: Xcel Energy Center
Mystics vs. Lynx TV Coverage: ESPN2
Minnesota is unquestionably the best team in the WNBA at this point in the season, but the Lynx have had some trouble covering games at home. They are 0-3-1 ATS at home due to the very large spreads that they have to cover. Under is 3-1 in Lynx home games this season.
The Mystics have won their last two road games and covered the spread in each. They have been using their solid defense to lock down other teams, which has been key to their success. The under is 6-3 in their last nine games as a result.
Only two weeks ago, these teams met in our nation’s capital with the Lynx running rampant over the Mystics. Minnesota jumped out to a 58-39 halftime lead and never looked back, winning every quarter and easily covering the 7.5-point spread.
Minnesota’s starters dominated Washington, particularly Sylvia Fowles. Fowles was a terror in the paint, hitting 10 of 15 shots on the night and corralled 11 rebounds too. She and the rest of the bigs for the Lynx had their way with the Mystics and made this one a laugher.
The lone bright spots for the Mystics were Tayler Hill and Ivory Latta. Both ended up playing well and were the only two that finished up in double figures in points.
Player to Watch
When these teams met earlier, the Mystics were missing their most important player, Elena Delle Donne. Delle Donne was acquired from Chicago in the offseason and has helped this team surge to the top of the Eastern Conference after waddling in mediocrity.
She leads Washington in points (21.1 PPG), rebounds (7.2 RPG), and blocks (14). She is a killer free-throw shooter too, knocking down 95.2 percent of her freebies on the season.
Delle Donne will help shore up the middle against the Lynx this time around. Minnesota won’t be able to be as dominant and will have to rely a little more on its guard play.
Mystics vs. Lynx Free Picks
There isn’t a weak spot in Minnesota’s starting rotation. The Lynx have one of the most talented, versatile lineups of any team in WNBA history and can use that to exploit mismatches.
Seimone Augustus is still one of the top players in the league. She is knocking down 52.7 percent of her shots and 47.1 percent of her three-pointers on the season as a guard. She should once again have a nice game against the Mystics after not missing a shot in their last meeting.
The Lynx also have Rebekkah Brunson. Brunson is a forward that can shoot from distance too and has even gaudier shooting numbers than Augustus.
Someone other than Delle Donne will need to carry some water for the Mystics. Hill has been the second-best scorer on the team this season, but has also been extremely inefficient outside of the prior meeting with the Lynx. If you take out Hill’s numbers from that game, she is hitting less than 35 percent of her shots this season.
It’s hard to go against the Lynx, even with what will likely be a ridiculous spread. Minnesota is going to get a home cover sooner or later and this is a good chance with the line likely being shorter than it is against other opponents. The spread will still probably be double digits, but it’s worth taking the Lynx to cover the number.
