It’s been rough sledding for the Nuggs since returning from the All-Star break. While Mike Malone’s squad got out to a solid start winning and covering its first three games against the Mavericks, Clippers and Thunder, it invades the Staples Center losers of three straight after most recently falling by a 104-103 final count in San Antonio. Nikola Jokic and his mates still showed a ton of heart in that loss to the Spurs making a game of it even though they trailed by 21 at one point in the first half. The loss and cover dropped Denver to 15-15 & 12-18 ATS playing away from the Pepsi Center.
Now 5.5-games in back of the Spurs for the eighth and final playoff seed in the Western Conference, you can now get 9-1 paid back on your investment should LA actually fight back and qualify for the postseason. Never in LeBron James’s NBA career was his team a -2500 favorite not to make the playoffs, but that is the harsh reality facing the team with 18 games remaining on the regular season docket. It’s gotten so bad that many believe LBJ should just pack it in and look ahead to next season when he has a much better cast of characters surrounding him. Either way, LA’s dropped five of seven since the All-Star break!
LeBron James – The Lakers having any shot of keeping its four-game win and cover streak at home versus Denver has everything to do with LBJ actually putting forth a maximum effort in this contest. When these teams collided in the Staples Center back on October 25, he went for a triple-double with 28 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. Los Angeles won that game outright 121-114 as 1.5-point underdogs. When the teams crossed paths again in the thin air of the Mile High City a month later, James was held to 14 points, 7 rebounds and a pair of assists. The Lakers got blown off the floor in that one by a 117-85 final count and never had a shot to cover the 3-point spread per the closing NBA odds. Should LeBron put forth one of his better performances of the season, the Lakers could have a shot.
Matchup to Watch
In the Nuggets 32 point pounding of the Lakers in the most recent meeting, Jokic and company outboarded LA 60-39. In the seven point defeat the last time they paid a visit to the Staples Center, Los Angeles was able to compete on the glass by only losing the rebounding battle 44-42. If the home dogged Lakers are to have any shot of sticking with the win hungry Nuggets, they’re going to have to compete like crazed mad men for loose caroms. LA hasn’t done much in the way of stopping the opposition from scoring points with the defense conceding an average of 118.2 points over the last five games. Should Denver actually miss, Los Angeles best make it a point to reel in those rebounds so as to prevent the Nuggs from getting second and third chances at putting the biscuit in the basket.
Bet Nuggets vs. Lakers at BookMaker.eu
As ripe a spot this looks to be to take the points with the Lakers, I won’t be falling for the trap. I believe this team has given up and is easy prey to fade the rest of the way. Had Denver actually finished off its comeback at San Antonio on Monday night, I’d be wearier of laying the road chalk with a huge game at Golden State on tap for Jamal Murray and company. Now two-games in back of the Warriors for the best record in the Western Conference, I fully expect them to come out determined to snap their four-game losing streak in the Staples Center and come out with a win by margin at offshore sportsbooks versus the Lakers.
