The Celtics were considered Eastern Conference favorites before this season began but now they are a team that is going to finish in fourth or fifth place. The Celtics don’t look to be serious challengers to either Toronto or Milwaukee and there is no guarantee they can even beat Philadelphia if the teams meet in the first round of the playoffs. Kyrie Irving continues to run his mouth about how everything will be different once the playoffs begin, but that is looking more and more unlikely.
“I can’t wait for all this other BS about regular season – and keep getting better, and talking over and over and over about what we can do to keep getting better in the regular season,” Irving told the media, “I just want to be at the highest level playing. And that’s what I’m here for.”
History is against the Celtics if they end up as the No. 4 or No. 5 seed, as only five teams seeded 4 through 8 have made the NBA Finals in the last 30 years and only one won the title.
Irving said that the Celtics are the best team in the East when they are playing well. “I don’t think anybody in the Eastern Conference can really compete with (the Celtics) at a high level when we’re playing the way we’re supposed to be playing,” Irving said to the media.
The problem is that the Celtics have not played at a high level for much of the season and they have been poor on the road. They are just 12-18 ATS on the road this season.
Golden State leads the Western Conference and they lead the NBA in scoring, but their defense hasn’t been very good. Part of the problem is that DeMarcus Cousins is a defensive liability. Golden State likes the offense of Cousins, but the Warriors didn’t have any problem scoring points before Cousins joined the team. Their problem is defense.
The Warriors lead the league in scoring at 118.6 points per game but they are just 17th in defense, giving up 112.1 points per contest.
The Warriors have done well straight up in this series, winning seven of the last ten, but they are just 3-6-1 ATS. It has been a low scoring series lately, with 8 of the last 10 going under. Golden State has won six of the last ten at home in this series, but they are just 4-6 ATS. Seven of those ten in Oakland went under the total.
The question is whether you want to take a Boston team plus the points playing poorly or whether you want to lay points with a Golden State team that is normally an unreliable home favorite. I lean a little bit to the Warriors, but I think the better play is the total. Golden State is simply not playing good defense with Cousins in the lineup and I don’t think that is going to change anytime soon. I will go over the total in this contest.
