Down 16 points with just over two minutes remaining in the game, the Jayhawks decided to blanket WVU with a full court press in hopes of forcing some turnovers that led to some quick points. That’s exactly what occurred, and it was shocking to see the Mounty’s have such problems breaking down a press when their defense does the same thing relentlessly in every game.
Before you knew it, Kansas found a way to send the game into overtime where it eventually pulled out the 84-80 win. That said, it still failed to cover the pointspread. That’s been an issue for Bill Self’s squad all season long. To date, KU has killed its betting backers by going 7-16-1 against the spread. As a visitor, Frank Mason and company stand 2-5-1 and will invade Waco still in search of a cover in the month of February (0-4-1 ATS).
Off back-to-back impressive wins and covers against TCU and Oklahoma State, it came as quite the surprise to see Johnathan Motley and his mates struggle against Texas Tech. Though it held a 36-32 lead at the break and seemingly looked to be in control, the defense simply couldn’t find a way to stop Keenan Evans whose 13 points helped the Red Raiders outscore the Bears 52-42 in the second half en route to logging the outright victory.
The defeat moved Baylor to 5-3 straight up and against the spread on the true road, but it now returns home to comforts of its own gym where it’s won 13 of 14. Like the Jayhawks unfortunately, it’s had all kinds of trouble beating the line makers when in front of the hometown faithful with it covering only four of its 10 lined contests. In Big 12 play, Baylor owns just one pointspread cover at home. That coming the last time it took to its home hardwood in disposing of TCU 70-52 as 8.5 point favorites.
The Bears looked like it was on the verge of winning in the Phog for the first time ever in these team’s first meeting with it leading the Jayhawks 34-28 at the break and seemingly being in control of the game. Motley and Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. terrorized KU’s defense in the paint, and Manu Lecomte was stroking it from deep. But then the second half came and Kansas flipped the switch. After getting dominated on the glass in the first 20 minutes, Landen Lucas and company did a complete 180 to ultimately lead KU to the 37-36 win in the battle of the boards. Kansas once again forced Baylor into taking jump shots, but they didn’t fall like they did in the first half.
When it was said and done, Kansas came out on top 73-68 but failed to cover the 6.5 point spread. The 141 points combined to just go under the 142.5 closing total.

I faded my Jayhawks in the first go round and also got a taste of the under. It was a perfect night for me. Kansas won but failed to cover the odds at BookMaker.eu and the under cashed as well. While happy with the overall win, I knew darn well I was going to fade KU once again in their trip to Waco. That time has arrived and nothing has changed in my mind to prevent me from doing as such.
Baylor coming in off a loss makes it that much easier of a decision. The cherry on top is Kansas coming off such an exhilarating win. While adrenaline will likely fuel them through the first half, there’s not a doubt in my mind that they’ll falter in the second stanza. Baylor has dropped nine straight to the Jayhawks – nine straight! That eats at you over time. However, they’ve seemed to get closer in the last two with those the only games they covered. Baylor is getting a ton of love from the selection committee right now, but if they’re to truly live up to those expectations, this is a game they have to win; and win convincingly!
