New York Yankees vs. Los Angeles Angels
Date and Time: Wednesday, June 14, 2017, 7 p.m. ET
Location: Angel Stadium of Anaheim
Probable Pitchers: Michael Pineda vs. Matt Shoemaker
Yankees vs. Angels TV Coverage: ESPN
Winners of five straight and seven of their last 10, the Yanks sit comfortably perched on top of the AL East standings four games ahead of the Boston Red Sox. A powerful offense paired up with above average starting pitching and a lockdown bullpen has allowed for the Yankees to more or less come from out of nowhere to become a bona fide World Series contender.
Judge now leads the league in home runs ( 22 ) with Matt Holiday ( 13 ), Starlin Castro ( 12 ) and Brett Gardner ( 13 ) also contributing to the 102 total bombs ( No. 1 ) New York’s launched into the cheap seats. The team has sent at least one into orbit in their last seven games, and will now set its sights on Shoemaker whose the owner of a 1.7 HR/9 average and has allowed four in his last three starts.
The Angels currently sit tied with the Mariners and Rangers for second place in the division. Unfortunately, they find themselves 12 games back after playing a game under .500 through their first 67 played games ( $10 ). While the Halos have won 18 of their 31 played home games ( $338 ), Monday’s loss saw them fall to 3-5 the last eight times they played in front of the hometown faithful.
The team has played some solid defense and owns an above average bullpen, but the starting pitching leaves much to be desired as does an offense that averages just 4.2 runs per game ( No. 24 ). While the offense has exploded for 11, 9 and 12 runs in three of their last five games, it just doesn’t possess that intimidating element with Mike Trout missing the last 14 games.
Michael Pineda has been a world beater when pitching in the Bronx evidenced by his 6-1 record and 1.96 ERA. The road has been an entirely different story however with him the owner of a 40.0 quality start percentage in opposing team’s ball parks. His last road effort saw him get raked for 10 hits ( 2 HR ) and 5 ER through five innings in Toronto. He’s 1-1 with a 7.50 ERA in two career starts against the Angels, and lost his only appearance at Angel Stadium back in 2011.
Yankees vs. Angels Picks
While Pineda has had issues throwing away from Yankees Stadium this season, I simply don’t foresee LA’s below average offense doing much of any damage against him. The Halos average just 4.1 runs per game versus righties ( No. 25 ) while striking out over 400 times ( #19 ). Shoemaker’s inability to keep the ball in the yard is going to come back to bite on odds at BookMaker.eu. The Yankees got to him with a pair of bombs in his lone start against them last season, and I can’t help but think Judge and company will find a way to get to him again tonight. Look for a quality outing from Pineda before handing it over to the pen. If Dellin Betances gets another crack at this offense, it’ll be lights out baby!
