The regular season is long and arduous. Every team is bound to get stuck in a rut over the course of a 162 game season. That’s exactly where Dusty Baker’s Nats find themselves right now after just dropping five of six at home to the Texas Rangers and Atlanta Braves. That said, there is a glaring problem area that must get rectified if it’s to become the complete package.
Washington’s starting rotation is chock full of stud arms that routinely go deep into games. Unfortunately, it’s starting five has been deprived of a number of wins due to the bullpen being unable to seal the deal. The Nats own the NL’s worst bullpen ERA ( 5.02 ) and Matt Albers is currently the closer. The team won’t be taken seriously if that remains the case.
You can’t help but be a fan of what the Mets are doing this season. With Yoenis Cespedes, Jeurys Familia and Noah Syndergaard missing a bulk of it, the team still sits just four games under .500 overall and could pull even at home if it were to come up with an incredible four-game sweep of their division rivals.
While their bullpen also raises some flags ( No. 25 ), the starting staff has gotten an infusion of young talented arms with the return of Steven Matz and Seth Lugo. Thor could be back around the All-Star break, so if Terry Collins’ staff can find a way to cut the team’s deficit in half, the Mets might just be primed to make a second half run. Investing on some Mets futures now might allow for some juicy hedging opportunities down the road.
The Nationals hold the upper hand in that department winning six of the last 10 overall meetings with the under cashing at a 5-3-2 clip. After sweeping the Mets on the road in their first run-in from April 21-23, the Mets returned the favor by taking the first two at Nationals Park before the Nats opened up a can by winning 23-5 to avoid the home sweep. Washington has made Citi Field its home away from home by winning seven of its last 10 visits with the under cashing in seven of those contests.
Nationals vs. Mets Picks
On paper, the Nats look like they should run away with this one with Mad Max Scherzer set to square off against Robert Gsellman. However, a closer inspection should have baseball bettors a bit wary about laying the road chalk on the odds at BookMaker.eu with the division leaders.
Gsellman has been NY’s most dependable starter of late having produced quality starts three of the last four times he took to the bump. The Mets have also won four of his last five home starts. On top of that, Scherzer has had his issues with NY this season having allowed 14 hits ( 4 HR ) and 8 ER through two starts. It would hardly be shocking if the Mets circled the wagons and beat their division rivals in a hard fought affair in front of a nationally televised audience.
