The Seattle Mariners and New York Yankees will be facing off for their first game of this series on Friday night, with the probable pitchers being James Paxton for the Mariners and Masahiro Tanaka for the Yankees. The Mariners badly need to win this game to stay in playoff contention, as they have fallen well behind the Yankees and A’s in the Wild Card race. The Mariners have not made the playoffs since the 2001 season. Let’s look at Friday night’s matchup and MLB picks.

The Yankees are coming off a series against the A’s and are currently in second place in the AL East. The Yankees have a 99.9% chance of getting into the playoffs according to ESPN and do not have much to worry about, except securing home field for the Wild Card game.

The Mariners have been struggling lately just to score any runs and they even are struggling to beat bad teams, as they lost 5-3 to Baltimore on Tuesday. The Mariners need to win this series against the Yankees just to stay somewhat in contention. The Mariners are in third place in the AL West, trailing both Houston and Oakland.

Starting Pitchers

Masahiro Tanaka has a 10-5 record and an ERA of 3.83. In his last start, he recorded the victory Saturday, Sept 1 by throwing seven innings, allowing just one run on seven hits and one walk while striking out six in the Yankees’ win over the Tigers. He has had back-to-back outings of at least seven innings for the first time all season. He took care of Detroit, notching a strike on 67 of 96 pitches including 15 strikeouts on his splitter. He has a 3.83 ERA, 9.0K/9 and 2.2 BB/9 going into his scheduled Friday visit to the Mariners.

James Paxton has an 11-5 record and an ERA of 3.74. In his last start, he allowed only three runs on two hits and four walks while striking out 10 in five innings to earn the win Saturday, Sept 1, against the Athletics. Paxton walked four batters for third time this season. It was his first start in nearly three weeks after being on the disabled list with a forearm injury. In his last three starts, Paxton has two wins and an ERA of 6.55 and 16 strikeouts.

Series Notes

The Yankees have won 8 of the last 10 in this series, with six of the last ten going under the total. New York has also dominated the Mariners in Seattle, taking 8 of the last 10, with five games going over and five going under the total.

Baseball Betting Picks

Yankees vs. Mariners Picks

The Yankees have been a much better team than the Mariners this season and they have been solid on the road. The Mariners have simply been struggling to score runs and the chemistry that served them so well early in the season seems to be gone. It got so bad on Tuesday night that a couple of players got into a scuffle in the clubhouse. The Mariners do have Paxton going in this game and he gives them a chance, but I think instead of looking at the side, I will focus on the total. The Yankees have not been nearly as potent offensively without Aaron Judge in the lineup and the Mariners continue to struggle to score runs. Both Tanaka and Paxton have pitched well all season, so this should be a pitcher’s duel. I will go under the total in this contest on Friday night.
