Brewers vs. Cubs TV Coverage: MLB Network
The top two teams in the National League Central meet on Tuesday night on MLB Network, as the Milwaukee Brewers visit the Chicago Cubs. Most people have simply assumed the Cubs will win the division, but the Brewers are hanging around. This is the second game of a three-game series that may go a long way toward deciding which team wins the NL Central. The probable pitching matchup has Jhoulys Chacin going against Jose Quinanta. Let’s look at Tuesday night’s matchup and MLB picks.
The Brewers were 37-35 in their first 72 road games, with 36 games going over the total, 35 going under, with one push. They are averaging 4.5 runs per game and giving up 3.9 per contest.
The Cubs were 44-24 in their first 68 home games, with 31 games going over, 36 going under the total, with one push. They are averaging 4.8 runs per game and giving up 3.7 per contest.
Chacin has been really good for the Brewers this season and a big reason why they are currently in a playoff position. Chacin is 14-6 with a 3.59 ERA this season. He is 2-1 with a 1.53 ERA in three starts this season against the Cubs. He has 22 strikeouts and six walks in 17.2 innings against the Cubs this season. The Brewers have actually lost two of the last three starts by Chacin overall even though his ERA was 3.71 in those outings. That includes his last start about a week ago when he gave up 5 runs in 4.2 innings in a loss to the Cubs. The Brewers have won two of Chacin’s last three starts against the Cubs, with two of the three going under the total.
Quintana is 12-9 with a 4.14 ERA for the Cubs this season. He is 2-0 with a 2.55 ERA in his last three starts. He allowed two runs in 6.2 innings last time out in a 6-4 Chicago win against the Brewers. Quintana is one of those pitchers who is streak and he is on a good roll of late, as he has given up two earned runs or less in each of his past four starts. The Cubs have won four of Quintana’s last five starts against the Brewers, with three of the five going under the total.
These teams have split their last ten meetings, with three of the last four going over the total. The Cubs have won five of the last six at home against the Brewers, with six of the last seven going under the total.
Brewers vs. Cubs Picks
I think there are two plays worth making in this game on Tuesday night. The Brewers are playing better than the Cubs right now and Chacin has arguably been the most reliable starter for Milwaukee this season. I know he didn’t pitch that well last week in a start against the Cubs, but I expect a big effort from him on Tuesday night. Quintana has pitched well of late, but he isn’t always the most reliable Chicago starter. I will take the plus money in this one and go with the Brewers.
I also think the total is worth a strong look. These two teams have been going under the total on a regular basis when they meet at Wrigley, as six of the last seven have gone under. I expect Chacin to pitch well and if Quintana doesn’t implode, this game should be low scoring. I will take this contest under the total.
