Braves vs. Diamondbacks TV Coverage: None
The D-Backs have fallen out of first place in the National League West and are also on the outside looking in of the wild card race. However, they have the talent to make the postseason if they can turn it back on down the stretch.
The Braves are atop the National League East and are in good shape to make the postseason as long as they hold off the Phillies for the division title. Atlanta has hit a recent lull but is still the favorite to win the N.L. East and a win here would help that cause.
The Braves have a record of 76-62 on the season. Despite beginning the year with lower expectations, both their offense and defense have been above average and this team looks to be in good shape to make the postseason. Atlanta is three games ahead of the Phillies in the National League East standings.
The Diamondbacks are 75-64 on the year. They are 1.5 games behind the Rockies and a half-game behind the Dodgers in the National League West, and also right behind the Cardinals and Brewers in the wild card race. Arizona is among the league leaders in run-differential and has some of the best talent in the N.L. but has to pick it up to make the playoffs. The D-Backs are only 36-32 at home this year and need to improve on that down the stretch.
Atlanta is scheduled to send Anibal Sanchez to the mound. He is 6-5 on the year with a 2.98 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP on the year. Sanchez has been revitalized this year and his success has helped the Braves contend for the playoffs. He has only given up one earned run in each of his past two starts and will aim to keep it going. The D-Backs’ offense has struggled lately but does have enough talent to break out.
The D-Backs will counter with ace Zack Greinke. He is 13-9 with a 2.97 ERA. Greinke is averaging exactly a strikeout per inning and does not walk many batters, which is a great combination. Even though Sanchez has a similar ERA this season, Greinke is the superior hurler. He has thrown eight quality starts in his past nine outings and should be counted on to keep the Braves at bay.
Braves vs. Diamondbacks Picks
Arizona lost the National League West lead when it dropped three of four to the Dodgers recently, and did so with several late-inning defeats. This is a critical time as the D-Backs must show some resolve and bounce back. If they lose this game and can’t win the series against the Braves, the season could start to slip away.
The Braves have more margin for error as the Phillies are a few games back and having some issues. While Sanchez has put together a very good season, it’s hard to trust him. Greinke seems in line to toss a gem, which will help give the Diamondbacks a much-needed victory. Even though the Braves have the better record on the year, the D-Backs may not have too much trouble in this one.
Look for the Arizona offense to break out as the Diamondbacks keep the pressure on the Rockies and the Dodgers in the National League West. Even as the favorites, the D-Backs are a good choice in the 1.5-runline odds at Bookmaker.eu.
