The Mets should embrace the role of spoiler as they prep for the first game of the matchups on “Monday Night Baseball,” which will be televised nationally on ESPN. The Mets have been sunk by all sorts of injuries to their starting rotation, and not surprisingly a fill-in will be taking the mound in this one.
The Yankees will certainly be the favorites in this showdown but check on the different lines at the top-five sportsbooks.

Probable Pitchers: Rafael Montero vs. Masahiro Tanaka
Mets vs. Yankees TV Coverage: ESPN
It has been a troubling season for Tanaka, who has long been an effective starting pitcher but has struggled this year. He enters with a 8-10 record and a 4.92 ERA. Tanaka is averaging more than a strikeout per inning and has a decent WHIP, but is giving up a .262 batting average against, which is much higher than in his career. Tanaka still has good stuff and it would not be a surprise to see him turn it around with a good outing against the Mets.
Montero is 1-8 with a 6.06 ERA on the year. He began the season in relief but has now started nine games because of the rash of injuries. Jacob DeGrom is the only Mets starter who has pitched all year, as stars Noah Syndergaard and Matt Harvey have been sidelined for much of the season.
Montero has averaged better than a strikeout per inning but has a WHIP of 1.81 and has walked way too many batters. The Yankees feature slugger Aaron Judge and other potent bats, which could be bad news for Montero’s ERA.
Since this is an interleague matchup, the Yankees and Mets have yet to face off this season. They will only be playing each other four times during the year and they will all be held this week. The first two games will be held at Yankee Stadium, and then the games on Wednesday and Thursday will be hosted by the Mets.
Even though these teams don’t play a lot, it is a nice rivalry due to the proximity. It arguably peaked with the Subway World Series back in 2000, which the Yankees captured.
Mets vs. Yankees Picks
The Yankees have the superior team, the better starting pitcher and the home field advantage. Clearly, they will be the team to beat in this contest.
The Mets are only 3-7 in their past 10 games and recently traded away slugger Jay Bruce in a salary dump. The Mets are looking toward next year and are hoping to have better pitching in 2018. For now they are hoping to annoy the Yankees with a couple wins in this series, but it won’t be easy.
The Yankees still have a lot to play for as they are atop the current wild card standings and still have an outside chance at tracking down the Boston Red Sox in the American League East. Boston is playing well and the deficit is 4.5 games so the Yankees can’t afford to lose games like these in which they are favored.
It is hard to imagine the Mets coming away with the win, unless young star Michael Conforto has a huge night to kickstart an unexpected offensive explosion. The Yankees seem bound to put up some runs, so if the Mets win it will be in a shootout. There should be enough faith in Tanaka to believe that he can keep the Mets’ bats at bay.
Mets vs. Yankees Pick: Parlay the Yankees to win with the “under” on Monday Night Baseball
Mets vs. Yankees Score Prediction: Yankees 6 - Mets 3
