The Dodgers are close to unstoppable at home and are facing off with a San Francisco Giants team on Sunday that has struggled all year. Even though Los Angeles is sending one of its two aces to the hill in this one, it should still be a heavy favorite to knock off San Francisco.
San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers
Date and Time: Sunday, July 30, 2017, 8 p.m. ET
Location: Dodger Stadium
Probable Pitchers: Matt Cain vs. Hyun-Jin Ryu
Giants vs. Dodgers TV Coverage: ESPN
Los Angeles is 44-13 at Dodger Stadium on the year while the Giants are 18-34 on the road. The odds would be even more in the Dodgers’ favor if Clayton Kershaw or Alex Wood were on the mound, so the Giants catch a bit of a break in facing off with Ryu.
He is 3-6 on the year with a 4.17 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP. Ryu has 74 strikeouts in 77.2 inning pitched and a strikeout-to-walk ratio of nearly 3-to-1. Ryu’s peripheral numbers look pretty good but he is allowing opposing batters to hit .280 off him, which has resulted in a higher ERA than hoped.
While Ryu has some flaws, he is the better starter in this matchup. Cain used to be dominant but he has fallen off in recent years. He is 3-9 with a 5.45 ERA on the season and fails to get soft contact regularly. Cain has given up five runs or more in five of his past eight starters, which should get the Dodgers licking their chops.
Los Angeles plays in a pitcher’s park and yet the offense is still among the best in runs scored in the National League, which is something to keep in mind when it comes to the scoring total. On the flip-side, the Giants have one of the worst lineups in the majors.
Surprisingly enough, the Giants have done extremely well against the Dodgers this season despite their overall struggles. The teams have faced off in 10 games on the year and San Francisco has picked up six victories.
The first four-game set came in late April in San Francisco, where the teams split four games. They met up again in early May, and the Giants went to Dodger Stadium to win two of three games. San Francisco secured a 4-1 victory in 11 innings in the rubber match of that one.
In the most recent series in San Francisco, the Giants won two of three again. Even though the entire year has been a bust, San Francisco takes pride in playing well against its rival and will aim to keep it going.
Dodgers vs. Giants Picks
Despite the recent success, it’s hard to imagine the Giants going to Los Angeles and winning the series. The more likely scenario is to see San Francisco pick up a game. The question is, which one would it be? This Sunday matchup features a starting pitcher in Ryu who is the most vulnerable to getting knocked around.
However, San Francisco is sending out a pitcher who has been worse this year. The Dodgers are too good to allow the Giants to keep picking up wins against them. Los Angeles should put up plenty of runs in this game and secure the win.
Shortstop Corey Seager has already established himself as a star for the Dodgers and outfielder Cody Bellinger is going to be the Rookie of the Year. The Giants have a star in Buster Posey but he is getting precious little help this year.
The Dodgers are the better team, have the better starter and the home field advantage. Don’t over-think this one despite San Francisco’s recent success.
