The New York Mets are looking to put on a much better showing in this weekend’s “Sunday Night Baseball” after getting swept by the Dodgers earlier this season. The Mets are out of the playoff picture but would love to play spoiler. The Dodgers are closing in on the home field advantage throughout the National League playoffs but a swoon would open the door for the Nationals. Los Angeles has an elite rotation but New York catches a bit of a break in this game, facing one of the Dodgers’ lesser pitchers.
Los Angeles Dodgers at New York Mets

Location: Citi Field
Probable Pitchers: Steven Matz vs. Hyun-jin Ryu
Dodgers vs. Mets TV Coverage: ESPN
The Mets’ starting rotation has been decimated by injuries this season, which is a big reason why they quickly fell out of playoff contention. While Noah Syndergaard and Matt Harvey are still sidelined, at least Matz is back on the hill.
He has only started 10 games this season and the results haven’t been that good. Matz is 2-4 with an ERA of 5.50 and a 1.51 WHIP. However, Matz has a career ERA of 3.72 and at age 26 seems to be a big part of the team’s future. He has been absolutely battered in his past five outings, giving up 24 runs to watch his ERA climb by more than three runs.
The Dodgers hope he is still off his game in this one, and they have the lineup to do some damage if that’s the case. Cody Bellinger and Corey Seager are two of the brightest young stars in the game while Justin Turner is having a career year.
Ryu doesn’t have the star power of Clayton Kershaw, Alex Wood or Darvish, but he’s still a serviceable starter. Ryu has a 3-6 record with a respectable 3.83 ERA on the year. He threw seven shutout innings against the Giants last time out and would love to keep that going.
The Dodgers swept the Mets earlier this season in a four-game series at Dodger Stadium back in June. The Dodgers defeated the Mets 36-11 in those four games.
The lopsided series, highlighted by a 12-0 win over the Mets in the second game of the series where the Dodgers hit five home runs, came in the midst of a red-hot 10-game winning streak.
The Dodgers finished with 15 home runs in that series and the performance catapulted the team into first place in the NL West. The problem for the Mets is, the team has yet to cool off.
Dodgers vs. Mets Picks
Things are definitely trending in the way of the Dodgers, but they can’t stay this hot forever. Los Angeles is a good road team but not nearly as dominant as it is at home, which works in the Mets’ favor.
And even though Matz has struggled mightily this year, he has the ability to turn it around. New York is looking toward the future, and it has a pair of promising pieces to lead the way. Look for a big game from Michael Conforto and Amed Rosario to result in the upset win over the Dodgers in this one.
Ryu can be good at times but he’s not over-powering, and the Mets will string together enough hits to win a close one. A loss won’t matter much in the scheme of things for the Dodgers, as they should still finish with the best record in the National League. It will be a nice confidence boost for New York, which is hoping to bounce back next season and play better.
