New York needs to put a dent in the deficit, especially at home. The game will wrap up on the nationally televised “Sunday Night Baseball” on ESPN. The Yankees have a thunderous lineup and they have bolstered their team by making several key additions before the trading deadline.
The Red Sox were also active recently adding pieces as they both are gearing up for a possible playoff push. The Yankees are in good position to make the postseason via wild card if they can’t catch the Red Sox, but the preference is to win the A.L. East in order to avoid the one-game winner-take-all wild card game.
This is a critical matchup, and even though the Yankees are at home, they could find themselves as underdogs at the top-10 sportsbooks because of the man on the mound when they are batting.
Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees

Location: Yankee Stadium

Probable Pitchers: Chris Sale vs. Unknown
Red Sox vs. Yankees TV Coverage: ESPN
Sale has been one of the most dominant pitchers in the major leagues this season. He enters this matchup with a 14-4 record and a 2.57 ERA. Sale has an insanely low WHIP of 0.88 and has struck out an obscene 229 batters in only 161.1 innings of work.
The veteran left-hander was added by Boston in the offseason, and while they paid a pretty penny in prospects, he has been everything and more they could have hoped to get in the deal with the White Sox. Sale threw eight shutout innings last time out, striking out 13 in a 2-0 win over the Rays.
Sale has gone 1-1 with a 1.80 ERA and a 0.90 WHIP in five career games at Yankee Stadium.
The Yankees have yet to announce their starter for the game. It was going to be veteran left-hander C.C. Sabathia, but he injured his knee in his previous start and may not be available. Jordan Montgomery may be the fill-in, or the Yankees could adjust their rotation and have one of the current starters go on Sunday.
It is clearly something to watch closely. Sale’s presence means the Red Sox should be favored in this one, but by how much depends on which starter takes the hill for the Yankees.
The teams have played nine times thus far this season, and the Yankees have captured six of them. They went to Boston and won a pair of games early in the season and then picked up two of three at Yankee Stadium in early June.
The teams played a four-game series coming right out of the All-Star break and split it. If Boston can close the gap in the season series moving forward, it will be in good shape to win the division.
Sale has pitched twice against the Yankees this season and surprisingly New York won them both. They beat him in April when Masahiro Tanaka threw a shutout, and New York rallied for a 16-inning win in a game Sale started in July.
Red Sox vs. Yankees Picks
New York has a really good offense, and one big fly from Aaron Judge could change the tenor of this game immediately. However, Sale has been so good all year that it’s tough to see him giving up too many runs.
Boston’s lineup is solid itself, and the Red Sox will likely score more runs in this one because they are facing an easier pitcher, whoever it is. Both of these teams are strong, but Boston’s pitching is a bit better, and it will be showcased in this one.
Sale will finally get over the hump against the Yankees in this one with a dominant outing.
Red Sox vs. Yankees Pick: Parlay the Red Sox to win with the “under” on Sunday Night Baseball
Red Sox vs. Yankees Score Prediction: Red Sox 5 -- Yankees 1
