The Aggies really look like they're in over their head at this point. And why not? They were really lucky just to get to this point, getting through the Houston region thanks to three really close victories, then getting the gift of playing against Davidson, a stunning No. 4 seed to get through the Chapel Hill regional.
Thus, a team that won five straight games to get to the College World Series never felt like it had a chance against Louisville on Sunday afternoon. The Aggies were down 5-0 in the second inning, and though they came back to make it 5-4 in the sixth, Louisville pulled away from there.
TCU meanwhile, has to figure out how to get its bats going. The Horned Frogs mustered just five hits against Florida on Sunday night, and that won't cut it in this game if they want to survive for another shot at Florida or one at Louisville.
The scariest thing here for the Horned Frogs is that Jared Janczak figures to be done at this point. He would pitch in Game 3 if there was a third game to be played, but after he allowed three runs in four innings and threw 87 pitches, there's no way he's going to be available for this one. The Frogs are going to hope that Brian Howard can come up with a second straight huge start in this one. He has just a 3.95 ERA on the season, and he also allowed just one run in 7.1 innings to finish off Missouri State in the Super Regional in his last start.
We're really not sure what the Aggies are going to do at this point with their starting rotation. They had to blow through both of their projected starters for this series in the first game against Louisville, and we can't imagine that Corbin Martin is going to throw again after allowing five runs in just 1.2 innings. Still, with Brigham Hill going 3.2 innings in relief on Sunday, it'll be hard to see him coming back on Tuesday on short rest.
The Aggies had to use five pitchers in totality on Sunday, and that might end up feeling a bit comprehensive to the staff. Stephen Kolek is the logical choice to start Game 2 of the CWS after he threw 8.1 innings and allowed just one earned run against Houston to close out the Cougars on their home turf.
Texas A&M vs. TCU Free Picks
Both of these teams are in a world of hurt right now. TCU's best starting pitcher never had a shot against Florida's lineup, and Texas A&M just flat out doesn't look like it has the horses to get through this. The Horned Frogs have the best shot at ultimately surviving to get to the National Championship series, but in the end, the winner of this game probably only has nine more innings to go before it's sent packing.
The Horned Frogs clearly have the better team, and they're going to have a bullpen that is much more ready to come in and save the day. We suspect there will be some big time runs on the board in this game, and will only further hurt whichever one of these teams that ultimately survives. We'll go with TCU, but the over feels like the better bet to us.
