Betting Analysis for 2020 Stanley Cup Futures Odds

Public money based on reputation and marquee status goes a long way towards explaining the Lightning and their favorite status. Vegas has become something of a trendy team that is popular with the large gambling base in their hometown area. Toronto is “old money” and a top marquee brand as the most valuable franchise in the NHL as named by Forbes. The Maple Leafs have the largest fan base in hockey and that translates into betting favorite status any time that they are good.

Tampa Bay Lightning

The Lighting will return virtually all of their key components from their top regular season team of last year. Tampa Bay finished with a record of 62-20-3-1 and was the top goal scoring team, in the NHL last year. Many believe that the problem for the Bolts last year was that they failed to encounter much in the way of adversity. When Columbus jumped all over them the Lightning looked completely lost. Certainly, no team is as talented as Tampa Bay. But is the price to high on what is likely the best team in hockey?

Vegas Golden Knights

Vegas was not as good in their second season and needed a strong second half serge to ensure a playoff berth. That being said the Golden Knights remain an upper tier team that can win any playoff series they are in. But are they really worthy of being the second pick to win the Stanley Cup? Vegas ranked only 13th in the NHL for goal scoring and 10th for goals against last year with a record of 46-34-7-2.

Toronto Maple Leafs

A blockbuster trade highlights the Maple Leafs offseason and enhances what was already their status as a top favorite for the Stanley Cup. Toronto sent Nazem Kadri and Calle Rosen to Colorado for Tyson Barrie and Alexander Kerfoot. Barrie is seen as the offensive style defenseman and power play quarterback that is essential for a Stanley Cup charge. Barrie must help shore up a backend that remains suspect to many gamblers. Toronto finished 20th in the NHL for goals against last year and could not kill off the Boston Bruins in the playoffs despite having a chance to clinch the series on home ice.

St. Louis Blues

It’s no surprise that the defending Stanley Cup champions are not a favorite to repeat. What is most ironic is that the Blues will be a better team this year and yet not likely repeat as champions. St. Louis caught lightning in a bottle with a Cinderella run for the ages last spring.
