Golf’s unofficial fifth major begins this week in Florida, as THE PLAYERS Championship takes place. The world’s best golfers will play the TPC Sawgrass Stadium course and take on the famous island green on the 17th hole. Rory McIlroy is the defending champion and he is the current betting favorite. McIlroy is the only player listed at single-digit odds. Let’s look at THE PLAYERS Championship that begins on Thursday and golf picks.

Factors to Consider

TPC Sawgrass is a par 72 that measures 7,189 yards. The course doesn’t really favor any particular type of player, as McIlroy won as a long hitter last year, while Webb Simpson won in 2018. Jim Furyk has finished second in this event twice and he is not a long hitter. There are 88 bunkers and 17 water hazards so accuracy off the tee is important.

Favorite

Rory McIlroy +700

I said it again last week and it proved true, as the favorite faltered. McIlroy has been finishing in the top five every week, and he is capable of winning this event again, but I simply have a hard time betting him as the favorite and keep in mind that no player has ever won THE PLAYERS Championship in back-to-back years.

Value Plays

Jon Rahm +1200

I am a little surprised that Rahm is listed at double-digit odds. He does everything well and there is no reason he can’t win this week. He ranks high in par-4 efficiency and Strokes Gained: Off the Tee and Strokes Gained: Approach. I think he is a solid play this week.

Bryson Dechambeau +2200

Although DeChambeau is not my favorite player, he is playing really well right now and he ranks in the top 10 in SG: Tee-to-Green and first in SG: Off-The-Tee in his past three events. I think he is worth a play at these odds.

Dustin Johnson +2500

I know that Johnson has struggled recently, but I think it is health more than anything else and he took the last two weeks off which I think will help. He likes playing this event and has not missed the cut since 2013. He ranks first in Shots Gained: Ball Striking in the past six events on Pete Dye courses. We don’t get Johnson at odds this high that often and I think he is worth taking.

Xander Schauffele +3000

Schauffele ranks second in Shots Gained: Tee-To-Green and he is first in Shots Gained: Approach in the past six tournaments. I expect Schauffele to contend this week and we get him at a nice price.

Matt Kuchar +5500

I know that Kuchar has not been playing that great lately, but he usually thrives on Pete Dye courses. He ranks seventh in Shots Gained: Tee-to-Green in this event and I think he can be in the mix this week and we get him at big odds.

Hideki Matsuyama +2800

We know that TPC Sawgrass is a ball strikers course and there are not many better ball strikers than Matsuyama. He ranks fourth in Shots Gained: Total in this event since 2015 and he is first in Shots Gained: Tee-to-Green in the past 24 rounds.

Kevin Kisner +12500

My big bomb this week is Kisner who ranks second in Shots Gained: Total at Sawgrass. We know that accurate hitters can do well in this event and distance is not a huge factor so that brings Kisner into play.
