The alternate event on the PGA Tour this week is the Puerto Rico Open where Viktor Hovland is listed as the favorite. This event will feature 120 players that didn’t qualify for the WGC event in Mexico. Defending champion Martin Trainer is looking to become the first player to ever defend his title. Ian Poulter is the highest ranked player in the field at No. 55 in the world. Some of the past winners of this event in the field are Chesson Hadley, Scott Brown and D.A. Points. Let’s look at the Puerto Rico Open and golf picks.

Beach Golf & CC course is a par 72 that measures 7,506 yards. It has hosted this event every year except in 2018 when hurricanes forced the event to be cancelled. Scores have ranged anywhere from 7-under to 21-under.

Stat to Consider

If you want one stat to consider then it has to be that seven of the previous 11 winners of the Puerto Rico Open have made this their first PGA Tour win. That means all of the defending champs are probably not worth playing and it also means you avoid taking Ian Poulter and some of the other players who have won previously on the PGA Tour.

Favorite

Viktor Hovland 11-1

I rarely take favorites in golf betting, and I can’t see any reason to take Hovland this week. He hasn’t even played on the PGA Tour recently, as he chose to play in the Middle East on the European Tour. Hovland came on the PGA Tour with a lot of hype, but he has yet to deliver and I don’t see him winning this week.

Value Plays

Alex Noren 15-1

You might be surprised to learn that Noren has never won on the PGA Tour. He has 10 wins on the European Tour and he looks to be in good form this season. He can sure compete against this field.

Patrick Rodgers 21-1

I should almost call this the oddsmakers play of the week. I was shocked that the price on Rodgers would be this low. Rodgers had trouble with his wrist for much of last year, but he looks to be playing much better this year with three top 30 finishes in his last four starts.

Scott Brown 23-1

I know I am going against my key stat of the week because Brown has won in the past, but Brown played well last week at Riviera and he has a win and four other top 10 finishes in this event.  I have to take a shot with him at these odds.

Matthew Nesmith 31-1

This looks to be a good spot for Nesmith to get his first win. He is a PGA Tour rookie and he has four top 20 finishes in his last eight starts.

Sam Saunders 125-1

Is this where Saunders gets his first win? He is playing on a sponsor's invite and he has played well on this course in the past with a tie for 2nd a tie for 5th and a tie for 39th. He can definitely be in the mix this week.
