The European Tour heads to the Middle East for a couple of weeks beginning with the Oman Open with Thomas Pieters listed as the favorite. Defending champion Kurt Kitayama is not in the field, but Joost Luiten, the 2018 winner is returning. The overall field is weak, as anyone of note is in Florida to start getting ready for the Masters. Pieters is the favorite at odds of 10-1 and then it is Martin Kaymer who is the second choice at odds of 15-1. Let’s look at the Oman Open that begins on Thursday and golf picks.

Course: Al Mouj Golf

Factors to Consider

It is all about hitting greens on this course, as GIR was the main stat of note last year. Luiten said that this course demands accuracy because when you miss fairways you are going to struggle because of the sandy patches and undulation. Jens Dantorp said it is a ball-strikers course, so GIR makes sense as a key stat this week.

Thomas Pieters 10-1

You should know by now how I feel about taking favorites and I am not sold on Pieters. I think of him as a player with distance who isn’t always accurate. He did finish sixth last year and his GIR numbers were not that bad, but I am still not backing him as a favorite.

Value Plays

Thomas Detry 17-1

I was really hoping for more than 17-1 on Detry, but he is playing well with five top tens in his last ten starts. He was first in GIR in Dubai and he was first in scrambling in Saudi Arabia. I have to mention him simply because GIR is the key stat this week.

Joost Luiten 21-1

I think Luiten should be listed at 10-1 instead of Pieters, so I think there is value in taking Luiten. He won this event two years ago and tied for 12th last year. He should definitely be in the mix this week against a weak field.

Min Woo Lee 26-1

I am surprised the odds on Lee are this high. He won the Vic Open in his last start and he was first in driving accuracy and 15th in GIR. He is very capable of winning against this field.

Jorge Campillo 67-1

Campillo finished second last year and he was fourth in 2018. He hasn’t been in great form this year, but this play is simply a horse for course play at big odds.

Matthieu Pavon 61-1

Pavon has played well of late with a tie for 11th in Dubai and a tie for 11th in Saudi Arabia. He did finish third on this course in the 2016 Grand Final. I think he is worth a flyer at big odds.

JB Hansen 71-1

Handen tied for 6th in this event last year and he finished second in a 2015 Challenge Tour event on this course in 2015. He could be in the mix this weekend.
