The European Tour is getting back into action after a long break due to the coronavirus, although this week will look different. The Austrian Open is going to be a dually sanctioned event on the European Tour and the Challenge Tour.  Many of the top players in Europe are not going to play, so there are a couple of solid favorites and then everyone else. Some of the best European players are in the United States playing events on the PGA Tour, while others simply don’t want to travel to Austria. Joost Luiten leads the field this week and he is listed as the betting favorite. Other top contenders include Thomas Detry and Adri Arnaus. Let’s look at this week’s Austrian Open and golf picks.

Course: Diamond Country Club

Defending Champion: Not Held in 2019

All other players are listed at odds of 100/1 or more or they are part of the field.

Luiten, Joost 6-1

I don’t back favorites that often, but this is one of the weakest European Tour fields in recent memory. That doesn’t mean Luiten is going to win, but I have to back him as the top choice. You could make a case he should be listed at odds lower than 4-1, so I am taking him at 6-1.

Value Plays

Detry, Thomas 9-1

I think you can make a case that this tournament is between Luiten and Detry. None of the other players in the field are anywhere close to the level of these two. That is how bad this European Tour field really is. I think you have to back both of the favorites this week and then throw in a few bombs.

Jiménez, Miguel Angel 40-1

We know that Jimenez has the talent to win and against this poor field he could definitely be in the mix, even at his age. There are simply not a lot of players who know how to win in this week’s field, so it is all about whether or not Jimenez is focused on playing golf or not. If so, he could be in the mix and we get odds of 40-1.

Bourdy, Grégory 60-1

Another player who at least has won some events is Bourdy and he is listed at 60-1. He has won four times on the European Tour and he has another five wins on other tours. If this event comes down to players who have the most experience in terms of winning then you have to give Bourdy a shot.

Karlsson, Anton 90-1

You may not be aware that Karlsson is doing well on the Challenge Tour, but he is in second place in the current standings. I said earlier that it is really all about the top two betting choices and then longshots. If someone is going to break through and get his first European Tour win then why not Karlsson at odds of nearly 100-1?  I think he has a ton of value at this number and it is not like he can’t compete against the quality of this field. If he does indeed win, he makes the whole season for us.
