AFC South Football Odds - 2017 NFL Betting Report
AFC South Divisional Football Odds - AFC Offense/Defense Betting Report
The Houston Texans’ tenuous grip on this division is starting to slip. Houston has won the last two AFC South titles with a 9-7 record, but both the Tennessee Titans and Indianapolis Colts are set to challenge them for supremacy this season. Even the lowly Jacksonville Jaguars aren’t too far behind and can compete for the title if things break a certain way.
Houston rolled the dice with Brock Osweiler last season and saw its gamble turn up snake eyes. Undeterred, Bill O’Brien pulled the trigger and traded up for Deshaun Watson in the draft. Watson steps into a fantastic situation and will likely be the Day One starter provided he plays well enough during training camp and the preseason. Every other quarterback in the league will fear facing the Texans’ twosome of JJ Watt and Jadeveon Clowney, provided both stay healthy.
The Titans are just a hair behind the Texans in this division according to the oddsmakers after the emergence of Marcus Mariota last season. Mariota’s mobility gives the Titans a threat that no other team in the division has and he finally has some real talent to throw to. Corey Davis and Eric Decker are better than any of his starting wide receivers his first two seasons in the NFL and he has a great pair of running backs. The defense is an issue and keeps Tennessee from being the favorite.
Offensive line play has been holding the Indianapolis Colts back for the last two seasons. Andrew Luck isn’t a statue in the backfield, but has been getting hit and sacked an awful lot. The Colts used a lot of their draft picks on offensive linemen last season and are hoping that they can show some chemistry and keep Luck upright this season.
If Blake Bortles could even be average this season, the Jaguars might have a chance at a winning record. Jacksonville could give Houston a run for its money as the best defense in the division and the selection of Leonard Fournette has the fanbase excited. The benefit of a last-place schedule will help Jacksonville quite a bit as games against the Browns and Jets are easier than any other teams in those divisions.

2017 AFC South Sports Betting Preview
It’s no secret what has held the Indianapolis Colts back the last two seasons. A poor salary cap situation led to the Colts needing to trim their roster, so they rolled their dice with a young, inexperienced offensive line and paid dearly. Andrew Luck only lasted half of 2015 as a result of a shoddy offensive line and he was sacked 41 times last year behind one of the worst pass protection units in the NFL. For Indianapolis to get back to the playoffs, the offensive line has to find some consistency. Continue
The Houston Texans have officially hitched their wagon to Deshaun Watson. Rick Smith and the front office effectively surrendered two first round picks and a second round pick for the right to take Watson at No. 11 overall in this year's NFL Draft. It's inevitable he'll end up under center at some point over the course of this season. He's got the team around him to succeed for sure, but Texans fans and bettors alike will have to be careful to put too much stock in what Watson may or may not be able to bring to the table. Continue
The Jacksonville Jaguars are trying to follow the blueprint that the Dallas Cowboys laid out last year. However, the Jaguars don’t have anywhere near the Cowboys had heading into 2016. The franchise is excited about Leonard Fournette though and the hope is that he can help this offense by opening things up in the passing game as well. If the passing game can’t get going this season, it will likely be curtains for the Blake Bortles era. Continue
The Tennessee Titans appear to have struck gold in selecting Marcus Mariota with the No. 2 pick back in 2015. Mariota took a massive step forward in his second season and looked like one of the best quarterbacks in the AFC for much of the season. His season ended in Week 16 with a fractured fibula, but he returned to the field for minicamp workouts in May and seems fine. Provided he is healthy, this team is a legitimate playoff contender in 2017. Continue
