UFC Fight Night 103 takes place on Sunday, January 15 at the Talking Stick Arena in Phoenix, Arizona. The card airs on FS1 starting 9 p.m. ET. MMA legend B.J. Penn will make another attempt at a comeback after pulling out injured for a Fight Night card in the Philippines. But instead of Ricardo Lamas, he’ll take on wild Mexican striker Yair “Pantera” Rodriguez in a matchup that projects to be a barnburner.
Also confirmed for the night is a featherweight matchup between Bryan Caraway and Jimmie Rivera and a welterweight contest between Court McGee and Ben Saunders, bolstering a solid night of action in Phoenix. Let’s take a look at some of the night’s best fights.
UFC Odds - Main Event
Featherweights - Yair Rodriguez vs. B.J. Penn
“Pantera” is non-stop action from bell to bell. His pace alone makes him worth a watch, but what sets him apart is his wild offense. The Mexican fighter doesn’t hesitate to throw whatever pops into his head, from spinning attacks to somersault strikes to every kind of kick imaginable. What’s more, he keeps up the pace and never slows down.
If Penn can make it into the cage healthy, he’ll have to answer a lot of questions surrounding his return. The first is whether he can still be competitive against young prospects like Pantera. He hasn’t fought in years, and took a frightening amount of punishment in his last few outings. The Hawaiian looked creaky, slow and every bit his 37 years.
Maybe training at Jackson-Wink will help him recapture some of the form that made him one of the most popular champions in UFC history. It’s been hard to watch “The Prodigy” get lit up so easily by good fighters in recent years.
UFC Fight Night 103 Odds: B.J. Penn vs. Yair Rodriguez Prediction
After three failed attempts at a UFC comeback, B.J. Penn will finally return to the Octagon this Saturday. But he’s not getting an easy comeback fight, as the Hall of Famer and former champion meets surging prospect Yair Rodriguez in the main event of UFC Fight Night 103. Given Rodriguez’s flashy, relentless offense, the 38-year old Penn might have been better off staying retired. Continue...
Bantamweights - Jimmie Rivera vs. Bryan Caraway
Rivera has been flying under the radar for long enough. Owner of an impressive 20-1 record, “El Terror” hasn’t lost since his second pro fight in 2008. Most recently, he earned a career-defining win over Urijah Faber at UFC 203. Now ranked No. 4, Rivera gets a true contender fight against Bryan Caraway in a matchup that could put him in title contention.
Caraway has won two straight, most recently handing Aljamain Sterling his first ever loss. 4-1 in his past five, “Kid “Dynamite” has been campaigning for a title shot for the past year now. A win against Rivera could solidify his claim, although a recent loss to Raphael Assuncao muddies the waters a bit. Still, the 135-pound class is wide open behind champion Dominick Cruz.
Welterweights -Court McGee vs. Ben Saunders
McGee has quietly held serve in the welterweight division, serving as a surdy gatekeeper at 170 pounds. Most recently, he captured a unanimous decision over Dominique Steele this past August. He is an established veteran this point, with notable wins over Robert Whittaker and Josh Neer.
Saunders has been solid in his return to the UFC after spending time in Bellator. 4-1 in his second stint, Saunders is coming off a win over Jacob Volkmann. Though Saunders has never been dominant in any phase of MMA, his ability to snatch finishes both on the feet or on the mat makes him an exciting fighter to watch.
UFC Fight Night 103 Predictions - Court McGee vs. Ben Saunders
Court McGee goes against Ben Saunders at UFC Fight Night 103 on Sunday night in Phoenix on FS1. This bout is one of four on the main card with the headliner having Yair Rodriguez taking on B.J. Penn. McGee is 18-5 in his career but just 4-4 in his last eight bouts while Saunders is 20-7-2 including 4-2 in his last six fights. There are also eight bouts on the preliminary card at UFC Fight Night 103 with four on FS1 and four on UFC Fight Pass. Let’s look at McGee vs. Saunders and UFC picks. Continue...
