Former champion Frank Mir gets a crack at the title again, as he takes on Junior Dos Santos for the UFC Heavyweight title. Mir, has officially replaced Alistair Overeem in the main event of UFC 146, according to UFC President Dana White.
Mir (16-5 MMA, 14-5 UFC) is now slated to fight UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos (14-1 MMA, 8-0 UFC) on May 26, 2012, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV. Frank Mir was originally scheduled to face Cain Velasquez (9-1 MMA, 7-1 UFC), but no word on Velasquez’ opponent has been announced.
Former UFC Heavyweight champion Frank Mir, has excellent skills on the ground and is on a 3 fight win streak, with wins over Mirko Filipovic, Roy Nelson, and most recently coming off the huge kimura submission victory over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 140. The 32-year old Mir holds an overall record of 16-5 with twelve finishes including nine via submission. The last time Mir lost a UFC fight was in 2010 against Shane Carwin. Mir has held the heavyweight belt twice previously in his career.
Dos Santos is of course coming off of his first-round knockout win over Velasquez in November to win the heavyweight championship on the inaugural UFC on FOX special. It's not a big surprise that Junior is set at big betting favorite over Mir - Mir's chin has been cracked before, and JDS hits extremely hard. Dos Santos is tough and rugged, and if it comes down to two rams battering their heads together, then Dos Santos will take this match easily.

Dos Santos vs. Mir - Junior dos Santos successfully defending his heavyweight championship with a second-round knockout victory over Frank Mir. Dos Santos was able to use his quick and precise boxing to out-strike and eventually knockout Mir in the second round. Although Mir did land a few leg kicks and counter-strikes, none of them seemed to phase Dos Santos.
Mir's only hope was to get the fight to the ground. But after Dos Santos avoided a leg lock attempt early in the fight, Mir did not really have an answer for him.
